Today, I got back from vacation and realised I still had the motel key. The key-ring has the address on it, so you can post it back to them. I drove to the postbox and posted the key. I then discovered that the motel key won't start my car. FML

Why are you on FML? You should be outside, by the postbox.

don't ever send those back. the workers can get personal info from u

They can, but it was an actual key, not a keycard.

*sigh* No, they can't. Do your research: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/hotelkey.asp

*sigh* No personal info goes on those cards. Where the hell do people get these assinine ideas? All that goes on those key cards is the room number, the check in date and the check out date. Ask any person who has worked at a hotel. And if people really believe that all your personal information goes on those cards well then! have I got some other things to tell you!!!!! :P

... You don't have a spare car key?

my sister lost the spare key to my car and apprently it costs $300 to replace. i don't have $300 to spend on a spare key, and no longer allow anyone to touch the only one i have left.

I think what #16 means is that most cars come with spare and/or valet keys, not the replacement of the key OP lost

so you left your car keys at the motel you were vacationing at.... but your car was at your house while you were on vacation. fail.

#17, read it again. That is not the case, considering he had already returned home from vacation and then drove to the postbox...

But if you drive to the post office how would your keys be packaged?

83 maybe he had a car with keyless start. He would put his keys in a box, but as long as the box was in the car it would still start

What the OP meant is that he had the motel key and his car keys with him. He accidentally dropped his car keys into the mail box instead of the motel key.

Im curious where you stayed. Its been ages and ages since Ive been to a place that hasnt had keycards in lieu of normal keys. And you need to pay more attention, assuming your car keys are on a ring, you should have checked to make sure you took the right key off and dropped it in the envelope.

It's not that unusual to accidentally mail something... About 10 years ago, I had some letters to send out and I was also going to return a movie to blockbuster.. and instead of grabbing the envelopes and putting them in the postbox, I put the blockbuster movie in the postbox. It happens. FYL

yeah but one imagines the guy had put the keys in the envelope.. how do you accidentally put your car keys into the envelope and not the motel keys?

I don't think you put the keys in an envelope, they have the address and everything on them on the key tag thingy and the post just takes them to the hotel. Is that just a NZ thing??

It doesnt matter that he accidentally sent his car keys ( tho that is the stupidest thing ever) what matters is what person is dumb enough not to have a spare set of car keys? Anyone that doesn't automatically make a copy of their car keys and house keys DESERVES to have them lost simply because they are that stupid for not taking necessary precautions. I swear... every generation that goes by the world is just getting dumber and dumber. Pretty soon humanity will start regressing and all intellectual advancement of any kind will cease to exist. And its reading the stupid shit people on here do and comment back saying that convince me of this.

most people I know don't carry their spare car key IN the car with them.

23: I don't have a spare key to drive my car, only the key to unlock it. The key to drive it has a chip thing in it and costs a lot of money to duplicate because of the chip. 41: if he had a spare key at home or anywhere, then this wouldn't really be an fml. He would simply call a friend or family member to bring him the spare and voilà! Problem solved.

I love these type of comments. I didn't see it coming until the last few words. Short, sweet & clever... even though that really sucks

I love the way this one is worded. Favourited.
