Thievery

Today, I checked my bank account that I've been saving money in since I was a kid for college. I have $100 left out of the $10,000 I had last month. Apparently my parents thought buying a pool and an HDTV for themselves was more important than my college education. FML

Sue. Sure, they're your parents, but God, being inconsiderate like that. It's your future.

That really ought to be illegal. You get screwed if your parents don't meet their financial aid obligations for your education, so there should be some legal requirement for your parents to meet those obligations.

Thank you, #48 - this is NOT ILLEGAL and a you CANNOT SUE. It definitely sucks what your parents did. But as their minor child and dependent, your money is theirs. Had you sued for emancipation, it would have been yours, although I think it would have gone to legal fees. When I went to college, I barely had any money, and my parents couldn't help. I still got through a private college and law school just fine by working, scholarships, and a few loans. You can still do this. Also, the idea of killing your parents because they took some money is insane. Good to know there are so many sociopaths on FML.

Well, for one, yes your parents are lame. Stupid, unnecessary purchases like that are the reason our country is in trouble (among other things, of course!). To those questioning this, of course his parents had access -- the OP is a minor (and/or would have been when the account was set up). But just an FYI to everyone: your parents are NOT obligated to pay for your college education. It's wonderful when they do help, but you are NOT entitled to it. I grew up knowing I had no college savings account because my mom couldn't afford it... so I worked my butt off to get a scholarship, the only way I had to go to college. Now, it sucks if all of that $10,000 was your money. But if it was money your parents had be putting away for college... well, lame that they changed their mind, but you have no legal rights to that money, and you're stuck, I'm afraid :(

#7: when you are under 18, you have no choice in the matter since you are underage. Since the OP said that he has been saving for college since he was a kid, I assume that his parents had control over his account when it was created. OP: that sucks, although its not the same situation, I went through something similar. My parents used to take my Chinese New Year and Birthday money since I was a kid and told me that the money was going toward my college account. As I got older, I realize that they lied and instead gave that money back to my cousins.

I'm with #2-sue them! Your college education is wayyyyyyyy more important.

I'm not quite sure how this FML worked out. First off, I don't know a single parent who lets their children view their bank accounts. So that's invasion of privacy on your part. Second, perhaps you didn't deserve to go to college? Sounds like you're a real smart mouth kid judging by the fact that you view your parents bank accounts - although it's for your education, it's their money. Judging by the fact that you say YOU been saving is silly since the money came from your parents.

#151: that isn't necessarily true that the money came from his/her parents. The money could have been his/her birthday money from his/her other relatives or even the money he/she saved from working.

#41, I've had my own bank account open since I was 12. Nobody except me had to sign. My parents aren't able to take anything out, but they're allowed to put money in. And to the OP, it's wrong for them to do that, but maybe your parents just thought you weren't going to college?
