Keeping up appearances

Today, my parents screamed at me for being diagnosed as depressed, because I’m not allowed to be depressed, because me being depressed makes them look like bad parents who couldn’t raise a happy, normal child, so I have to be happy or I’ll be punished. FML

Man, I wonder why you're depressed with parents like these. Speaking as someone who also had a severely unsupportive parent reaction to depression, someday you will be able to tell them they have no more power over you, and that will be the most satisfying moment you'll feel all year.

Unfortunately earlier generations were raised with an attitude that mental health issues were a failing and not a health issue... OP, your parents attitude towards your depression doesn’t help at all. And unfortunate much of society takes essentially the same attitude - they say cheer up and smile. Which really means hide your pain… OP, you really need to see a mental health professional. Hopefully you are already. Depression is rarely cured with just antidepressants - Though they may help and ideally are part of the aid when appropriate. Hopefully a counselor or psychologist can help you figure out how to handle your parents attitude.

Too bad that Big Pharma couldn't monetize "Don't cry or I'll give you something to cry about." Instead they crank out drugs to be used with "therapy" that rewards your ongoing depression with attention and care.

Depression is an illness resulting from psychological and chemical causes, and often the BEST treatment is attention and care, you ungodly dickweasel. Tell us you know nothing about medicine...

Yeah. No shit. My dad (boomer gen) cried because I would suffer Bipolar all my life. Meanwhile, he won’t treat and ignores his making everyone else suffer around him because of his refusal to treat making us miserable by trying to drag others down with him. I became really happy when I cut contact with him. Best decision ever.

The beatings will continue until moral improves...

that 100% proves they are in fact terrible parents.

🫂 Imagine how much of your depression is going to just mysteriously vanish the day you move out and cut contact with them.
