Today, after talking to the bank, I'd have to take a pay cut to qualify for a home loan. I'm still confused. FML

I’m guessing they were explaining a very specific type of home lone to you. Perhaps a first time homebuyer loan or a similar loan with special rules. A traditional 30 year mortgage won’t have a maximum limit to it.

That means you were trying to apply for an assisted loan for lower income households. I’m guessing you’re trying to finance a bigger loan than you qualify for without assistance. So either save up to make a bigger down payment or find a cheaper home.
