Today, I came home to a lease violation and a $220 fine after a routine pest control visit. The violation: my single beta fish in a small bowl. FML

just take your beta fish to your landlord and yell him/ her you were going to make fresh sushi and proceed to take out the fish and wrap it to a ball of rice with nori and ask your landlord to try it :D WARNING side effects are diarrhea, constipation , pooping of guppies and sea sickness.

Really? For a fish. The beer you drink is much more likely to do damage to the apt than a fish, which is the point of a no pet rule. FYL for irrational rubes.

OP deserved it. It's a stupid rule but if you are going to break the stupid rule, either hide it, or find out whether or not the landlord is super picky about those rules. If its an unreasonable landlord, it might be time to find a new place.

I do know a lot of places say no pets on paper but allow fish since they don't do any damage... Seems like an innocent enough mistake to me

omg guys let's get real here. a fish can't make noise, doesn't swim or eat loud, it's in a bowl, and it's harmless that make great room pets! if they got a violation for a fish that means someone went into your house at hunted that fish down!!

the theoretical idea for not allowing fish in the apt is that fish are generally kept in large amounts of water, if anything happens that the water somehow spills in large quantity, that can cause serious damage to the aparment. Also bettas are generally kept in standing water, so there could be a concern for algae, mould, bugs, or the landlord's just a dick....

Huh...I always thought that fish were perfectly fine when it comes to the 'no pets' thing. As it was already pointed out, they do absolutely nothing to cause a disturbance. Sounds like someone's landlord is just being a big meanie.

It depends on what state you live in on whether a fish is a lease violation. I know here they don't include fish as a pet in the no pet policies but if you have an aquarium they can ask for more of a deposit in case of water damage but don't if you own a goldfish or beta tank.Just ask beforehand.

I didn't realise states intervened with leases to that extent. I would've assumed it's up to the landlord. If you signed the lease, OP, you should've read it. Keep Bubbles hidden since you know your landlord is a wanker who will work you fir every penny he can get.

What's up with the "Today, I violated a rule, and got a fine. FML."-fml's? Sure, it was a small violation, but read everything you sign, and ask if you have any additional questions - and if you assume you'll be fine because it's just a small breach, I'd say say you didn't do anything morally outrageous, but you should be prepared that you're running the risk of getting a fine.
