Today, my son told me to "grow a pair" and ask my girlfriend of a year and a half to marry me. He is 7 years-old. FML

OP, your son is right and you should be lucky to have a son like him. Listen to your son. He likes your girlfriend. Go for it and ask her!!

Isn't a year and a half a bit short to jump into marriage? :|

from other comments apparently people get married after 2 months some times now. my rule is 4 years. if you can last that long with out too many problems you can go most likely for a while.

My fiance and I have been together for 5 1/2 years. Marriage- no pressure. We are at different places in life. I understand there will never be a perfect time to get married. Honestly, I'd like to elope- get it over with. The point is it's easy to ask a woman to marry you. It's harder to actually go through with it. 1 1/2 years is more than enough time for a proposal. Your son is adorable and really, you should take his advice. Most people get engaged at 6 months. It's kind of like the "shit or get off the pot" moment. I don't exactly agree with it but I've heard enough of girl talk to know that's the point where they want a decision to take it to the next level with a relationship or break it off. I don't blame your girlfriend for getting a little impatient.

Most people get engaged after six months? Citation, please? Because I've not met a single person who did or would even want to. You completely know someone after half a year, really? What planet are those girls from? Hell, on average, engagements themselves last anywhere between a year and two years. Check it... "Q: How long should a woman wait till her beau proposes? A: 18 months." http://blog.timesunion.com/kristi/6918/why-hasnt-he-proposed/ (How long were you dating before he proposed?) "I read recently that the average courtship before engagement is 18 months. Huh... what? My man proposed to me 4 years, 7 months after we started dating, and he considered that to be a "fast" courtship!" "2 years, 9 months." "3 years 7 months." "5 years, 11 months."* "7 Months" "4 years 7 months."* "5 years, 11 months" "About 2 1/2 years." "We were dating 18 months" "a few days shy of our 6 year dating anniversary." http://forums.onewed.com/showthread.php?t=17280 (*They thought the proposal was late) Quotes taken just from the first page. Not one of them in the rest of the thread said 6 months. (How long did you date before you proposed or got proposed to?) "We got engaged about a year after our daughter was born." "It was about a year before he proposed to me" "My husband and I dated only 3 months before he proposed." "5 years for me..." "we dated for 7 months then moved in together, and a year and a half later, we decided to get married" "My hubby and I met April 28th 1999, started dating May 4th 1999. I moved in with him May 8th 1999. He proposed to me Dec 25th 1999." "We dated off and on for 5 years before we became engaged." http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1399475.aspx Again, taken from the first page I could keeeeep going on but this is getting tl;dr I don't know where these commenters get the idea 6 months is average/too long to wait, as nobody else in the normal world seems to think so. And if you feel you're waiting too long for a proposal, anyway (as was the case in a few things I read), then ******* PROPOSE YOURSELF and don't be a giant twat just because someone doesn't feel ready after only half a year. (Not directing this completely at you by the way, as we seem to agree...)

People can get married whenever they want!!! As long as it's for the right reasons there's nothing wrong with it

Either this is fake, your girlfriend told him to say that, or he heard her saying that. Those are the only possibilities I can see. In either scenario where this is actually true though, I seriously think you should just break up with her for saying something like that in front of your kid.
