Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I asked my girlfriend's dad for permission to take her hand in marriage. He said no, because he doesn't want her marrying a "sexist idiot who treats her like property", which he thinks asking permission amounts to, then told me to grow up. FML
Today, I asked for permission to marry the girl I love. Her father not only said no, he said "HELL no!" FML
Today, I asked my girlfriend's father for permission to take his daughter's hand in marriage. He asked me "Which one?" I said "Uh, the one I'm dating... Lisa." He belched and said, "Yeah sure, throw 'er off a cliff for all I care. Piss off, boy." So much for chivalry. FML
Today, my girlfriend's father sent me a text message that simply stated "You ruined my relationship with my daughter." I wanted to ask him for his blessing to marry his daughter. FML
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend at a dinner with our two families. Not only did she flatly reject me, my dad said, "Good call. He's not ready." FML
Today, I happily told my parents that my boyfriend proposed to me last night. My dad's response? "Marry that goofy bastard and you're out of the will." FML
Today, my boyfriend went to ask my dad for my hand in marriage. All I could make out from the door was mumbling, until profanities started flying. My boyfriend shouted "well she's a SINGLE bitch now!" and stormed out of the house. My dad still refuses to tell me what happened in there. FML
Today, my girlfriend's dad offered me $100 to break up with his daughter. I eagerly replied "No", but my girlfriend grabbed the money and said, "Deal." FML

Today, I introduced my girlfriend to my dad. I thought it was a good idea at the time, at least until he took her aside for a private chat. During the chat, he told her all about my two previous marriages and advised her to "get out while you can". FML

At which point you turn around, say "Thankyou for your advice...." and you marry her anyway.

Propose in spite of him. In front of him would be better. When she hugs you out of sheer joy, make the devil horns and wiggle your tongue at her dad.

Also, it makes it easier to beg for money to help pay for the wedding.

whoa. well that's tough. if you really love her then marry her but the father's approval is a big thing. He might ignore you forever and you might get depressed and you might kill yourself. I say go for it.

just marry her if you really love her(: And he could of been being sarcastic .

Apparently he did not approve of you. Although good try on the old fashioned proposal. Gone With The Wind anyone?

Also I think he was showing respect to her father. And depending on how they were raised, she may find this perfectly acceptable not "disrespectful". Its a personal preference. Most men are not asking for "switched ownership" but for the approval of the father. Aka the one that will kick their ass if they make daddy's little girl cry.

There are several things wrong with this. 1) Why is he only showing this so-called "respect" for the father? Why not her mother too? 2) Why do you need the father's (and again, why not the mother's?) approval to marry their daughter? It shouldn't really matter if they approve or not. They're not the one potentially marrying this person. 3) "Daddy's little girl"? Seriously. If she's still "Daddy's little girl" maybe she shouldn't be getting married at all. And really, what if the situation was reversed? What if the girl was asking the guy's parents for their permission/approval? Wouldn't everyone think it was bizarre and unnecessary?

1. He's showing respect only to the father because of how things were back in the olden days. 2. Why does he need approval? He doesn't. He's just trying to make sure the father's okay with it before he proceeds. Again, the olden days... 3. Who are you to make assumptions like that? Women are allowed to be close to their fathers. I'm relatively close to mine; does that mean I shouldn't be getting married? 4. I personally wouldn't see anything wrong or unnecessary about it. Mind you I don't think in a more modern time it's necessary for the man to ask the father, either. Rarely anyone does it. But, to each their own.

#88: Back in the olden days, this was done because asking to marry the daughter was akin to asking to buy a horse. You can't say olden days to this and expect it to make it ok because it's not, it's disrespectful, demeaning and patronizing.

He's very polite to have shook your hand before replying no. A polite man indeed.
