Today, while my hometown mayor becomes a world-famous crackhead and douche-bag, here in the UK it has come to this: when people hear my accent and ask me if I'm American, it's less embarrassing just to say, "Yeah", rather than admit I'm Canadian. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, for the second time this week, I was asked to stop putting on such an obviously fake "British" accent. I am British and have lived here all my life. FML
Shitgibbon
Today, here in Canada, my father-in-law talked to me about how people who are "not Canadians" are destroying the country. He called me an "import" several times within the course of an hour. I've been a citizen for over twenty years. FML
We the people are tired
Today, I live abroad, but I was born in the USA so I'm sick of people asking me who I voted for in the last election, all while looking at me weirdly and suspiciously. FML
You can talk, mate
Today, a customer asked me if I was English, because I was struggling to understand what he was saying. I said yes. He then called me a liar, and said I must be "one of them Polish immigrants." Oh, and he also had a thick Scottish accent. FML
The clichés are real
Today, I've been living in Canada for past two years, and my friend from the States came to visit. He was talking about how Canadians are so polite, but I was in total denial, that he didn't know anything. While I was arguing with him, a guy in front of us walked into a pole, then apologized to it. FML
Today, I became the town racist for saying "black" instead of "African-American". I'm black. FML
Today, it was my first day at school in the United States. Being from France, my French accent is really strong. After being made fun of all day, I met someone from Montreal. I was so excited and said, "Parlez-vous Français?" And his response? "HUH?!" FML
Today, I had to explain to my grandfather that Canadians aren't evil by reminding him that he's Canadian. FML
Today, I met my Canadian friend at the airport. As we were heading into the city, I told him not to worry about all the US stereotypes and that gun crime in my city is rare. A few hours later, we witnessed a guy get shot in the street in broad daylight. Now he's too scared to leave the house. FML
Bruvophobia
Today, my mom mentioned how she loves a certain actor's "British" accent. I couldn't help but mention that there's no such thing, and that there are lots of different accents in Britain. She got pissed and lectured me for "lying" to her and trying to make her feel stupid. FML

It's not that big of a deal, OP. He isn't the first politician to do drugs or have some sort of scandal going on. He won't be the last. Everyone has flaws and their problems.

How is being an American embarrassing? I'm not even born in this country yet I'm proud of being here. Besides, why would you let the mayor define your pride?

No, it IS a big deal. The mayor of one of the biggest cities in their country smoked crack cocaine, and you don't think it's a big deal? Of course everyone makes mistakes, but when you are an elected official, the most powerful person in a very large city, you are the face of that city. Full stop.

That person doesn't define the city in itself. The elected official is there through his term and then leaves, the city does not go through an identity crisis every few years. San Diego has had some pretty shitty mayors, but no one remembers reminisces over them.

I mean Bill Clinton almost got "blown" out of office by Monica lewinski and silvio berlesconi had sex with an underage prostitute. This is Canada's first scandal since no one knows how long ago

I guess it makes sense that if they let their mayor define their hometown, they would let an American (or Americans) define their view of America.

But Canadians have a different accent than Americans...

It depends on what part they're in. I had some friends visit from Victoria, and they sounded pretty American.

It's also down to the individual, I'm from the UK and I've unfortunately offended a few Canadians by asking the same question. I'm useless with accents, absolutely hopeless.

Proud to be an American, or at least you'll pretend to avoid being known from a town with a drugy mayor

Suck it up. Or rather, snort it up?

It's not really that big a deal. Personally, when I think of Canada, I don't think about any of your politicians...I think about how beautiful it is, and how I wish we had mounties!

Be proud to be Canadian! You'd rather admit you're under Obama?
Ambient25 25
Just because you live in the country doesn't mean you approve of the politics. You can hate the politicians yet still love the country. Even still, the policies and politicians don't define the pride.

Hey, for a while there Americans were claiming to be Canadians overseas. Things change.

Lol I get asked if I'm Canadian about 60% of the time. But I did grow up close to the border.

I'm proud of my Canadian heritage The way the American's government has been mucking up lately I would stick with my heritage. In a few weeks the media will have forgotten him.
