Today, the girl I'm dating mentioned that she'd had her healthy wisdom teeth removed to prevent her future children from having wisdom teeth. I laughed. She wasn't joking. FML

Um... I think she should have kept those wisdom teeth a little bit longer. Apparently those were the only things sending a charge to her brain. Please don't father those children... she'll just blame you for them having wisdom teeth.

#79 You are right. Evolution is the word. But apparently this "doctor" said that wisdoom teeth will eventually go extinct because we remove them, not because they're selected out by evolution.

A trait being useless doesn't guarantee it will "evolve out". Many organisms (humans included) have vestigial organs. If it doesn't negatively impact the rate at which the organism successfully reproduces (and wisdom teeth certainly don't do that, at least any more), the only chance for it being bred out comes from random genetic variation. Natural selection doesn't look at what's "useful". If it has no meaningful impact, there's no environmental pressure to influence the breeding pool.
