Today, nearing the start of what I was hoping to be a relaxing week off, my air conditioning system died. A replacement system will be in the $7000 range, just the amount I'd finally saved for my dream vacation. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Can't take the heat
Today, I almost paid off my credit card. Then, a couple of hours later, my air conditioner broke. Found out it’s 12 years-old and leaking Freon. I’m going to have to get a whole new unit, which will cost me $6,500 to $10,050. FML
Hot hot hot
Today, my AC stopped working and I have no money. I live in Phoenix, Arizona. FML
Today, my furnace broke down, almost a month after its twenty year warranty expired. It would have been replaced for free. Now I'm going to have to take out a loan to afford the $4,000 replacement. FML
Today, my boiler packed up on me just as the weather has turned cold, with no money to have it fixed. Hello to a week of freezing cold showers. FML
Today, our AC broke. It's 98 degrees inside the house. My parents will be staying at a 5 star resort until the repairman can come to fix the unit in 6 days. They made me stay home to make sure the plants survive. FML
Today, we had our first rainstorm in weeks. Thirty seconds before it started, my window broke in the "down" position from overuse, since last week the air conditioning in my car gave out. Now I have a hot, wet car. FML
Today, after my washing machine broke yesterday in the middle of a cycle, I went and spent $1400 on a new one. Also today, my dryer started to smoke and almost caught my clothes on fire. There goes another $1000. FML
Livin' the dream
Today, I’m finally on the very expensive dream trip I’ve been planning for months and… I have a debilitating migraine that’s making me bed-ridden. FML
Today, my dryer was finally repaired after not working for over a month. I did one load of laundry and my washer stopped working. Another day, another $400+ repair bill. FML
Where do we go now?
Today, while vacationing in Mexico, the Airbnb we were supposed to check into today for 3 weeks just called to say that due to a broken water pipe, they're unable to host us. We're supposed to check out of our current stay in an hour. FML

So instead of having to come up with $7000 from scratch you already have the money saved? Sounds like you got lucky

go on your vacation to somewhere cold. Then you won't need to worry about the broken air conditioner, and you can always fix it later

get home insurance if you dont have it already and then make a claim. or buy a $1000 air con

Insurance doesn’t cover that stuff. Home warranties will, but in some cases, if your stuff is newer, you end up spending more on the warranty than replacing the one thing that breaks. Maybe see about financing? Also, if you haven’t already, call at least four companies. I was originally told 8k to fix mine. Ended up under 6 and has a pretty good warranty on it. That was the only company that didn’t offer financing though, so I got a credit card just for it. 0% interest for the first year. Paid it off before it kicked in.

Ya what kinda air conditioning costs $7000?!! Or even a vacation for that matter! That's too pricey! Any modern air conditioner shouldn't cost you a fortune.. Perhaps do some research and save yourself a nice trip to somewhere affordable?

OP said "air conditioning system" so that could mean anything from the units themselves to the piping to the insulation to the compressor to the gas. My air conditioning system recently died and we had to get it repaired. The compressor died, the condensor died, and the insulation and piping were all wrong. Total cost to repair? $7500. The labour cost is the killer.

Oh and a decent vacation for 7k is pretty good. A few years back we went on a 10-day vacation to Singapore and it cost upwards of $10,000. It depends where you're flying from and where you're going and where you're staying and what you're doing and a million other things, but imo 7k is pretty good.

I could go on multiple vacations for 7k. Last vacation (14 days) I spend about €1200 that's including the plane ticket.

I don't know anything about AC costs, but I completely agree about the vacation cost.... seems wayyy too pricy. I can't think of anywhere you would want to go (for lets say, 2 weeks) that would cost more than 4k. (I'm being generous there, I would personally never spend that much on a vaca, and I travel all the time.) And I'm including airfare, food, lodging, everything. 7k is reasonable if you're leaving for many months, I'd say. Only exception is if OP has a family that they're taking with them.

I'm with you. Just got a 17 SEER Bryant unit installed for $4200. Unless the furnace went kaput too (for the fan itself) OP, get some windows units if you have pets. They'll last until next year, and they hardly go down in value. Can always sell them next year when you get a full unit in.

Does your place allow window units? You can buy a few and put them up and still go on your vacation and relax.

A lot of US Home Owners associations and condos do to allow window units.

You can also get portable units that use a tube to vent out the window.

Sometimes it’s sucks being an adult. The choice is clear, use the money to get the AC fixed, shop around for a decent price but be sure it’s good quality. Be glad you have the money to get it fixed instead of blowing it on an expensive vacation.

You don't know where and how long she wants to go. You don't "blow" money if it's important to you. I spent about 6500$ last year to visit south east asia for 3 months and a half and I surely don't regret it.

Get the A/C, crank it up full blast and have a Staycation in your own personal Alaska. Look, a polar bear!

You could open your windows as a temporary solution..?
