Today my mom, bored lover of games and mysteries, bragged about outsmarting scammers by burning all the post and gifts they have been sending her. For a special birthday / Christmas, I'd splurged on an expensive, interactive mystery game where you are mailed clues over the course of 6 months. FML
Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
No Columbo
Today, as my wife loves games, she set me a series of clues leading to our date night, where she's waiting for me. WHY? She knows how bad a problem solver I am. By the time she realised I was going to be hopelessly late, and answered my 50 missed calls, I’d only solved the first 2 clues out of 18 total. FML
Today, my sisters and I pitched together nearly $500 to send my mom to the spa for Mother's Day. We put the printed sheet with her info into a little box with our card on top. When she opened it, she freaked out and started hugging my dad. Turns out he switched the cards and took all the credit. FML
Thanks but no thanks
Today, I received three big boxes from my mother in law, containing expensive cookware. I was puzzled, because I know that she hates me. Turns out she mailed them to us by mistake. Not only did she not get us anything, but I now have to pay to ship the boxes to her neighbor. FML
Today, I discovered my mom has been using my credit card to buy everyone's Christmas presents. FML
Anger management
Today, my mom told me that I needed to manage my spending better. This is the same woman who will log onto Candy Crush Saga, play a level and not come remotely close to beating it, and then blow $20+ on it to complete it. She got just a tad angry when I pointed out this hypocrisy. FML
Today, my best friend excitedly told me all about this new video game she'd just discovered that she thought I'd love. It was her Xmas present from me 2 years ago. FML
Grumpy git
Today, it's my husband's birthday. I tried to buy him a new computer game, to which he complained. I cooked him steak and his favorite cake, and got him another nice gift instead. Hours later, his online friends bought him a new game and it was the only time I saw him genuinely smile. FML
That's worth $0.30 at GameStop!
Today, it's my birthday. My mom and three other relatives each bought me a copy of Diablo 3 for my birthday. A video game that I didn't ask for, for a console I don't have. FML
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Today, I won a game of Monopoly against my girlfriend. She reacted by sweeping the board off the table, storming out the front door, and mowing down my mailbox driving away. FML

Even if the gifts were items from scammers, I don't see how becoming the scammers' elaborate garbage collector would be "outsmarting" them. If she got hypothetical scammers to send /her/ money, then we'd have something… "A murder at the duchess' palace has left us in need of your help… if you could send—" "Sure, but I'll need about thirty bucks for supplies." "Uh… okay, but then we'll requir—" "And food."

And now you solve the mystery of why she didn't mention anything about it so far...

Aww OP, that sucks. Is the mystery part of it, supposed to be who sent it? As someone who has never heard of this kind of game, I'm kinda confused.

Check out the Mysterious Package Company. It's a cool concept, but like OP said, pricey.

The Mysterious Package Company was one of the best gifts I've ever received. Her loss.

That's not your fault that she missed out on something awesome OP. I think a game like that would be pretty interesting and fun to solve.

For what it's worth, she's probably going to feel absolutely terrible when she finds out the truth.

If you didn't tell her it was part of a gift, you deserve it. I'd throw away anything that looks like junk mail also. On another note, you may be able to get a partial refund if you call the company and complain about their poor packaging.

How do what I assume are letters and packages look like junk mail? And telling her would defeat the entire purpose of a mystery, wouldn't it?

Well, not really. I mean, telling her she's going to get something in the mail isn't exactly solving the mystery.

Dunno if starting an ARG for your mother, who I doubt knows what an ARG even is, without telling her was a good idea. Still sucks though.

Is that abbreviation for augmented reality game?

I know how your mom feels. I hate those scammers who actually send me gifts. Why can't they just ask me for 1000 dollar and promise to repay me tenfold only for me to never hear from them again like a normal human being. Gawsh! (also kinda random but is anyone else's spellcheck telling them to start a sentence with 'Trump' or 'Trump is' only then followed by the "I"? I rant about Trump a lot but not often on my phone.... Meh **** this past election and how it haunts me even on my phone *curls up in fetal position*)

Are you alright?
