Today, my English professor bragged to my entire class about how good my essay was. He kept on saying great things about it for the duration of class. To my surprise, he'd given me a C-. When I asked why, his only response was: "I'm a hard grader." FML

Today, I got the best grade in class on my economics midterm. Rather than tell me I did a good job, my professor criticized me in front of everyone about how I was working "too hard". FML
Today, I got a writing assignment back. After meeting with my professor specially after class and meticulously combing through every word of that paper, I got a low D. Turns out, he graded me down on every suggestion of his that I took. FML
Today, after turning in a paper that I worked really hard on, I got it back with a grade of 0. In the feedback section, my professor wrote: “In all my 37 years of teaching, this is by far the worst essay I have ever read.” FML
Today, I discovered that when my professor had said "For every A there will be an F," he was deadly serious. I earned a 94% mark, which in this class is known as a D. FML
Today, I had my teacher look over my essay before turning it in. He said it was extremely well-written, so I handed it in. When I got it back, the feedback he left said it was one of the worst essays he'd ever read. FML
Today, I went to get my midterm essay grade thinking I couldn't have made lower than a B. Got to class and my douchebag professor gave me an F. He wrote "Best essay I read, would've been an A if it was the right topic." I wrote on the Industrial Revolution, instead of the Scientific Revolution. FML
Today, I asked my professor what happened to the assignment I gave him several weeks ago. Turns out he lost it, and graded me zero as a result. Now if I want a mark, he says I'll have to hand-write it all over again, but that I "probably shouldn't bother," because it was "a bit shit, really." FML
Today, I got my grades back. I got a very poor evaluation for my lit class, which was odd because it didn't match the impression from my end-of-class meeting with the professor. It does, however, include a nod to the supposedly-anonymous negative class review I gave her, though. FML
Today, my teacher's comments on my essay read, "I know it's college, but you use a lot of unnecessary words with a lot of syllables." He basically scolded me for having a complex vocabulary. I go to an accredited state university. Nothing says "America" like under-achieving professors. FML
Today, I got my language final exam back. It was a 10-page essay front and back, and I saw that I received a D. The teacher told me the plot was too hard to follow and it jumped all over the place. It turns out he forgot to read the back of every page. FML

Some teachers have particular sins that they deduct a lot of credit for. My wife is an English teacher and in her class you lose ten points right off the bat for things like using the pronoun "me" or "you" in an academic paper, and if you're a day late then the max you can score is a 75%. This is all spelled out up front, but it does mean that an otherwise good paper may not score as well as expected.

teachers seem to always crush kids / students hard work by grading them crap grade because they seem to have a ' entitled ' chip on their shoulder. woukdnt it be easier to help motivate and push our worlds students in wanting to be better then crashing them down all the time!! this happens everywhere. well done on actually submitting and producing a grand essay!!

What's the English department like at your school, and is this a required course for all students, or is this necessary for a major or minor? If it's a general course, there should be department-wide standards as to how essays are assigned and graded, which would give you the ability to talk to the department chair. Granted, I haven't taught in five years, and that was a public college, so take this advice with a grain of salt. If you're majoring in English, this is a requirement for the major, but the course is the pet project of some longstanding, tenured professor who arranges his sabbaticals around this course because he doesn't trust anyone else to teach it properly...sorry, OP, but you're SOL.
