Today, my dad refused to sign a student finance form to allow me to study my dream subject at university because he doesn't want the government knowing his business. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I realized that when my dad said he would pay for my college, he really meant that he was going to forge my signature on a student loan in my name and not make payments on it. FML
Today, I borrowed my dad's laptop to type an essay. While I was saving it, I noticed some curious looking files and I opened them. They were rejection letters from all the colleges I had applied to. My dad had been forging them so he wouldn't have to pay for my tuition bills. FML
Today, I found out that I was denied for work study eligibility by my college. I went to my financial advisor to ask why. It wasn't my grades or attendance. Apparently my father makes too much money for me to get a job at the school. My dad was fired 3 months ago and has been out of work since. FML
Selfish
Today, my mom yelled at me because I refused to lend her money. The reason I won't lend her money? The last time I did, she and my dad went out and bought a Macbook and a new car instead of paying bills. Apparently, I'm being 'selfish' by keeping my own money and putting it towards university. FML
Today, I found out that my dad, thinking it was an advertisement, threw away a letter from the college I applied to. FML
Ironic, isn't it?
Today, my father's company shut down his branch, leaving him without a job. This is followed by a letter from my school's financial aid office, saying I'm not getting a penny because my family's income level is too high. FML
Double standard
Today, I had to endure my father going on a sexist rant about how women shouldn't be allowed to go to university because it's "unrealistic" since "all women" become stay-at-home mums. This is the same man who threatened to kick me out if I dropped out of uni. FML
Priorities
Today, I called my dad to ask why my university tuition had not been paid. He said that my school was "too expensive" and he "couldn't afford it." He then asked me if I would take in his mail while he was away. He was taking his new wife to Hawaii; apparently it's beautiful this time of year. FML
Today, I got an offer to study at a good university. My father has been pushing me to apply for years, so I ecstatically broke the news. Instead of congratulating me, he just grunted and delivered the more important news that he's divorcing my mum. Moment ruined. FML
Today, I discovered that when my parents offered to help me pay for college, what they really meant is they would get the forms for me to apply for student loans. FML

I imagine the Government already know his business. Especially if it's the US or UK Governments.

My parents did the exact same thing to me. They literally just flat out refused to sign anything so I could get financial aid. I had to wait FIVE YEARS till I turned 24 so Ny state would use my financial background instead of my parents. There was no other way around it.

I often (well maybe not often but regularly) see here post about people having parents with such behaviour. And eveytime I can't process how parents can act that way towards their children. It sounds so illogical when parents are supposed to wish and do the best for their children. And it's not always parents who had a tough life or stuff like that. Considering this is not even a perfect excuse, both my parents have had an atrocious youth and even after their lives have been full of countless harsh moments ; still they did their best for me.

If you default on loans, this makes them responsible. They have every right to refuse.

That doesn't mean that the kids can't pay the parents back at least. Does the word "instalment" mean anything?

Why should the parents be responsible for what their children do as adults? What if they don't pay them back? Should the parents be on the hook for $100,000 so their kid can follow their dream??

Instalment means nothing. I believe the word you're looking for is installment.

Not in the US, unless they cosign a private loan. The federal student loans are the responsibility of the borrower.

Unfortunately that is not true. The parents become responsible for the students financial aid if he defaults if parents have signed the documents. I work in finance and see this coming up on adults Financial papers that they owe their kids debt, from their kids refusing to pay. they can use the parents financial information help qualify for Grants, but if the kid is getting any financial aid and the parents signed they can be held responsible and this is in the US

It is bullshit how much you have reveal to the government to even be considered for financial aid. And if you hide anything, you and your kid can be in trouble.

is his name Dale Gribble by chance?

I'm assuming your father has a phone number, a mortgage/lease and he works. The government knows everything. Unless he's feigning stupidity so he doesn't have to cosign!

My mother did the same, and waited until the last possible moment to tell me. In the year I had "off" I worked a lot to save money and also looked into scholarships and grants. It can be done. It sucks though. Have you thought about financial emancipation?

Is your dad Ron Swanson?

Tell him that the government track people who refuse to sign form because they are "subversive". He needs to sign to fool them into thinking that he doesn't know what they are up to!
