Today, my boyfriend proposed. The ring just had a piece of graphite on it. My boyfriend argued that since graphite and diamonds are both just forms of carbon, it is the same thing. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
The Hulk
Today, my very cheap boyfriend of four years proposed. I was overwhelmed with emotion, since he bought such a huge, seemingly-diamond ring. I was later overwhelmed with emotion when my finger turned green. FML
Today, my boyfriend won a diamond engagement ring through a citywide competition. Instead of proposing to me, he's selling it. FML
Today, my boyfriend proposed to me by tossing the ring at me and saying "Here, wear this." FML
So romantic
Today, my boyfriend proposed to me with the prettiest, most simple ring I have ever seen. I called my sister to tell her the good news, and her response was, "I know. He had me steal the ring from Claire's." FML
Today, my boyfriend told me he's prepared to commit to marriage, but only if I buy my own ring and tell everyone he surprised me with it. FML
Today, I was out with my boyfriend, when he started browsing wedding rings. He found a ring, proposed to me right there in front of a crowd, and then was promptly denied a payment plan. We left without a ring. FML
So romantic
Today, my boyfriend proposed to me by handing me a ring and saying, "Let's get this dumb shit over and done with." FML
Today, my boyfriend gave me the most beautiful diamond ring I have ever seen. As I excitedly put it on my finger, he told me it wasn't an engagement ring, but I should wear it like one to keep other men away and seem "unapproachable". FML
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend. She just grabbed the ring and said in a raspy voice, "My precious..." FML
Thanks De Beers
Today, my boyfriend proposed with the biggest, tackiest, most Geordie Shore-style ring I’ve ever seen. I said yes because I love him, but this thing is twice as wide as my finger and just looks horrible compared to the solitaire ring I told him I really liked. I’m embarrassed to be seen wearing it. a) That's actually very romantic and b) You don't need a diamond on a wedding ring. It's a useless custom that doesn't exist in many other places. In Germany, wedding rings usually are rather inconspicuous, because you wear it for the rest of your life in any situation. What good would a diamond do while washing dishes, wiping your butt or repairing the washing machine? c) Many diamonds used in American wedding rings are blood diamonds anyway.

girls dream of a proposal and you're focused on an object, focus on what really matters, that someone loves you enough to commit to you even though u are obviously more concerned about material possesions..

dude, he just proposed to you. you shouldn't care about what the ring is made out if. even if it's a damn plastic one from a vending machine.

Explain to your boyfriend that: - an uncooked meal and a cooked meal are the "same thing", which does he want? - him being left to himself to ********** and him having sex with you are the "same thing" for the male since both result in ejaculation, which does he want? and so on until he understands. As for all of the people calling the girl materialistic, I think not. He's making the opening move of his married life in a way that doesn't comprehend his girlfriend's wishes. That's not smart -- and you'd think someone who knew that diamonds and graphite are both carbon crystals would know enough to understand the importance making sure that significant life events (such as proposals) are joyous rather than let-downs.

his gf IS materialistic. what is the significance of a diamond to her? his commitment to her? his ability to foolishly spend extravagant amounts of money and go into debt over a ring with a sparkly jewel on it that really just represents war and death? yes, that's a great way to start a marriage. a marriage based on realistic expectations are the ones that last. a diamond, big or small, doesn't make a marriage work. she just wants a ring to show it off. he realized that he wanted to make this HUGE commitment to her, acted upon it, and that wasn't special or joyous enough for her... she needed the pretty and expensive blood diamond to make her happy. materialistic.

I understand OP's point. However, diamonds aren't actually forever, it's not the most stable form of carbon. Graphite is way more stable. So, in order for this to have come out right he should have said, since I want our love to commemorated in something that lasts longer and more stable than diamond, I give you graphite. Or something romantic like that. He used poor choice of words ):

why the heck are girls never satisfied with the rings they get?! the engagement ring is almost always gonna be smaller, cause he'll give you a really nice one at the wedding! the size of the ring shouldn't matter if you love him back!
