Today, I worked up the courage to ask out the girl I liked. I got her a nice bracelet for her birthday and asked her on a date when I gave it to her. "Aww, you're so sweet!" was the response to the gift. Her response to the date proposal? "Wait, you aren't gay?" FML

Girls don't like gay guys in that way. They think of them as their perfect guy without a sexual component. They never think of the gay best friend as a sexual partner. Sorry bro.

I never really understood the way people just assume someone is one sexuality or another because of personality traits. I generally don't think about people's sexuality at all. When I do wonder, I usually think about asking them, then decide it doesn't matter because by the time I got to the point I would be romantically attracted to someone, they would probably have either told me their sexuality or dated people enough for me to have a fair idea on what it is. Of course, this means the few times I have gotten to the point I am able to develop romantic interest in someone, they are usually already in a relationship and I am not the type of person to try to break a couple up, regardless of my feelings.

I hope you weren't thinking you'd get a yes just because you gave her a birthday present. There's also nothing wrong with being gay and that was probably a genuine question which you could have smoothly corrected. I fail to see how this is a FYL in any way. **** her life for having a guy assume she'd date him just because he bought her a gift.

A lot of pretty or extroverted girls probably have similar experiences to this one. They're used to men being open about how hot they are, so when they come across someone who is too shy to show their interest they take it at face value and assume the lack of flirting means they're not his type, which leads to them being put on the spot when he comes clean. Please don't feel undesirable because of this, not every girl is going to make the same assumptions.

buying jewelry for a girl you're not even dating is kind of creepy. that reeks of desperation. as for thinking you're gay....i don't know what to say.
