Today, I woke up with a swollen face and have been diagnosed with mumps. Despite having been vaccinated against it. Twice. I have three assignments due next week and I can barely stay awake long enough to type this. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Free healthcare, please?
Today, I have brain damage, no two ways about it, because I had mumps as a child that caused my brain to swell. I just found out I only got mumps because my dad lied to my mom about getting me vaccinated, because he was too cheap to pay for it. FML
Walk it off
Today, I woke up at 5 a.m. because my throat was swelling up. I called 911 and they determined that I would live, so I took two Benadryl and slept all day. Then I went to urgent care for my scheduled appointment time and tested positive for Covid. FML
The Teaching Life
Today, being incredibly ill after my second COVID shot, I called in sick for maybe the third time in 10 years (I teach). That didn’t stop parents from calling and messaging to scream at me because they weren’t happy. I had to drag myself out of bed and do work in between throwing up. I feel even worse now. FML
Neverending
Today, despite getting all vaccinations and taking all precautions, I've tested positive for Covid. Again. FML
Boosted
Today, I went to get the vaccination my college requires of all students. The nurse looked at my charts and told me there was good and bad news. The good news was that I didn't need the shot. The bad news was I needed four others. Now, both of my arms are swollen enough to make Popeye proud. FML
Today, I had two of my wisdom teeth removed. One side of my face is completely swollen, and the other is normal. I feel like the elephant man. FML
Today, after a week of no side effects, my bronchitis medication decided to screw me over. I'm running on 3 hours of sleep and half of my face is sunburnt in randomized patches. Guess who has a huge presentation today. FML
Today, I learned that I have a sinus infection, ear infection and bronchitis so bad it was on the verge of pneumonia. My work won't let me call in sick. I work with kids. Lovely. FML
Stay safe
Today, I'm in quarantine after testing positive for Covid. Two weeks after starting a new job. Two months after receiving the vaccine. FML
The Trifecta
Today, after blacking out from fever, I found out that the reason I've been feeling so sick is that I've somehow come down with pneumonia, strep, and the common cold all at the same time. FML

That sucks beyond suckage :( Herd immunity is important for the 5 to 15% of vaccinations that don't "take" (some vaccines are nearly perfect, others less so). Anti-vaxxers ruin it for the rest of us. Plus side, if your teachers are in their 60s, they've had the mumps and know what you are going through. Those of us younger got our vaccines back when EVERYONE vaccinated (pre-doctor-google-and-sticking-jade-rocks-in-your-hoo-haw-and-magic-pink-salt). So, they may not know how much mumps knocks you flat. But, let them know, cross fingers, and then go recover! You can also email them a picture of you looking like a chipmunk.... You might also ask the health office (or school nurse, depending on where you go) what the vaccination rate at your school is. If it's dipping under 95%, might be time to change schools. If one vaccine didn't work for you, others might not have worked, either!

Call your school/college, let them know you have the mumps, and ask for extensions on your assignments.

how is this an anti vaxxer fault?
Madrias 36
Because they break down herd immunity and turn their children into bacteria bombs to infect everyone else who can't get vaccinations, or for those who the vaccine didn't work as well with. So, yes, the anti-vaxxers are to blame.

My college had a confirmed case but I don’t think it spread too bad

Darwin wants you.

This is why herd immunity is important. There is always some small percentage of the population who cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons or in whom the vaccination is ineffective. They're reliant on the immunity of their neighbors to keep from getting sick. It's why vaccination is not a simple personal choice.
