Today, I woke up at my cousin's house after staying the night. I went into the bathroom like I usually do and shut the door. Apparently the door lock on this bathroom doesn't function properly. I discovered this when my 4-year-old cousin walked in on me putting a tampon in. FML

Boom. Life lesson. If your cousin asks, just tell him/her sometimes you have to just pull some strings to get by.

I created this account to respond to some of your comments.. My cousin is a boy, and it was a very awkward explanation. I just told him that it's a girl thing and that he'll learn about it when he's older. I don't think it affected him that much. Also, #7, I enjoyed your comment the most.

Hello ! I'm French (I'm sure you're happy to font ear me speak English with French accent ^^) and I just would to know what means "OP". I'm new here and I discovered it because I was on VDM, the French (and original for one time) FML. Are you asking what "OP" stands for? If so, OP stands for "original poster" (The author of the FML). Hope this helps.

You seem to have handled it well. Also, he will not be traumatized. Children have no real concept of what's normal and not in our culture yet, so for him it is simply a new thing he didn't know of, like anything else he hasn't seen before. We learn what to do in private through socialisation, we're not born to think certain things are never supposed to be spoken about, that is why different cultures have different taboos. Children don't find anything embarrassing until they have realised they are supposed to, and a four year old isn't old enough to do so yet.
