Today, I went to a conference for work. When I got there I sat beside a woman about my age. She immediately got up and moved to the opposite side of the room. We were the only two there. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Give me a break!!
Today, in an effort to avoid having the same break as my annoying coworker, I went a little earlier than I usually do. Guess who got moved to a position with an early break? She sat next to me. FML
Wrong target
Today, I was hitting on a girl who was getting ready to walk into the same class as me. We were waiting outside the room, so I told her that I'd heard the professor for the course was a total bitch. We walked into the room. I sat down at a desk. She stood behind the podium. FML
Today, as I caught the train home, a woman got on and sat on the only available seat next to me. We got talking and as the train approached the next station, she said that this was her stop and she had to go. She exited the train and I turn to see her enter the compartment behind me. FML
Today, after moving house, changing my number, my email, and beginning legal action to get away from a girl who was stalking me, I decided to go to the movies to relax. As soon as I got in my seat, that same girl walked into the nearly empty theatre. She sat next to me. FML
Move!
Today, I was at the cinema. There was a really tall woman in front of me and whenever I leaned to the right or left she would lean to the same side I do. Later, she started laughing. They guy next to her was telling her where I moved. FML
Today, in an effort to make new friends in my history class, I sat in the empty seat next to a friendly-looking guy. He got up, walked away, and sat down in a different seat. FML
You fool
Today, my wife and I both spent a weekend away separately with our close friends. However, we ran into each other, unplanned, at the airport. She was with her girls and I was with my girlfriend. FML
Today, my girlfriend and I went on a date. I went to the bathroom. When I came back, she was sitting at a different table flirting with a guy that looked twice as old as her. FML
Today, I went to a movie with this guy. He was late so the only seats available were the ones in the very front which he refused to sit in. As we were looking for two seats, he spotted one near the back and sat down, leaving me to sit by myself in the front. FML
Fun fun fun
Today, my mom dragged me along with her to a baby shower. I was the only guy there. FML

Why did you sit right beside her if you were the only two there in the first place? You probably creeped her the **** out.

Maybe it's just cause I'm British but personally I'd do the same. Why did you feel you had to sit right beside her? She probably just doesn't like strangers in her personal space. I highly doubt it was anything to do with you.

Ugh, do you sit in the bathroom stall right next to someone, even when there are lots of empty ones? Give people a little space if you can. This is a common courtesy.

Just because you're the only two people there doesn't mean that she should have to sit by you. Just because she moved doesn't mean that she necessarily has a personal problem with you, not that it isn't a likely guess. Grow a spine, OP; it's not your problem... unless you had something "more" in mind, in which case, I might act the same way that she did.

I'd probably have done the same. Have you never noticed that at conferences people space themselves out around the room as much as possible? There's a reason. It's easier to listen when you don't have someone sitting right beside you irritating you with their moving and breathing and annoying habits.

With the people assuming over interaction in a conference, there is no way based on the wording to assume either that assumption is right. I have actually been to a work-related conference where they have told us after to move around and partner up, but most you don't need to interact with others there, just listen/general discussion. I was at one once where we were graded without knowing it until later on where you sat and how you interacted. There was a woman in the room "setting up" but what she was doing was observing how we behaved on entering the room. Those that sat down right next to someone else, when there were still plenty of seats (it was set up to have 4 extra chairs per person there), and did not try to interact with them lost big points. If you sat next to someone and tried to interact you were still okay. But in general, for my company, when there are seats available, you should sit with an empty between you, management believes that those who sit next to each other are more likely to talk inappropriately during the conference, and will ask that you leave space.

Very well put. I apply the same thing. I think a chair in between is good. It gives enough room so that you're not right in the person's space, and it's close enough to interact if necessary.

I would do the same. I mean, if the room was empty and you sit right next to me I would have thought you were psychooooo

She probably felt threatened (sexually) by you because you decided to sit next to her when you could have sat opposite her...

Wait. So you walked into an otherwise empty room, and sat right NEXT to the only woman in it? That's just double-plus creepy. No wonder she moved. I'll bet her FML is in here somewhere. "Today, I was sitting in an empty room waiting for a conference to start, and some creep ..."
