Today, I was selling personalised stockings at work. When handing a customer's order over to her, which had no name on, I joked, "Oooh this is a bit mysterious". She replied, "Actually, it's in memory of the baby I miscarried earlier this year." FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, at work, I misheard a customer telling me a story. To be polite, I did a slight laugh and nodded my head. She actually told me her mum had died. FML
Today, I was at work, when a co-worker began to shake a near empty box. Without thinking, I shouted "What if there was a baby in there? You just killed it!" I then remembered she recently suffered a miscarriage. FML
Today, my family attended the funeral of an old family friend's baby, who died in childbirth. Afterwards, my husband went around snickering and quietly telling dead baby jokes to the other attendees. FML
Today, I gave a beautiful book of baby names to a friend of mine who's been trying to get pregnant for a while. She just burst into tears when she saw it. Just before meeting me, she'd found out she was sterile. FML
Today, a week after my miscarriage, my little sister thought it appropriate to wrap her belt around her neck and scream, "Hey look, it's your baby!" FML
Good
Today, at work, I asked a lady how she was doing. When she replied, I didn't understand her, and instead of asking her what she'd said, I just replied with, "Oh, that's good." What she'd said that I didn't understand was that her husband had just died. FML
Bad timing
Today, on the first occasion I've seen my boss since her brief leave, I brought up how I got to hear all our customers' heartwarming plans for their moms on Mother's Day. Her mother just died. That's why she was on leave. FML
Today, after telling my mother-in-law about my recent miscarriage, she cheerfully made a cake to celebrate. FML
You're back!
Today, I heard that one of our customers had passed away. Saddened, I told everyone who came into our shop about his death. Understandably, some customers got very upset and one even fainted. Suddenly, the "dead" man walked into the shop. Turns out I got the name wrong. FML
Bad time for a joke
Today, I learned that when a heavily-pregnant friend asks about my progress with the baby socks I promised to knit, it's rather unwise to tell her, "Not to worry, we're set even if it comes out with a few feet too many." She's still crying. FML

You didn't know. Although that would've hurt to talk about a lost baby.

That's a bit bizarre for a parent to do. Why leave the kid's name off if it's supposed to be in memory? What am I missing here?

christmas stockings. some malls have stands where you can pick designer stockings and have them personalized with all kinds of fancy letters and trim. i, personally, have never seen one, but my vivid imagination has allowed me to

ok thanks it's just a little early for Christmas so I had no idea what kind of stocking op meant

I believe the words Christmas stocking kiosk may have been a better explanation.

there should be a skill testing question people are required to successfully answer prior to being allowed to comment ...

True dat

True. However, I'm sure the mother was still upset over the loss, so it still is an FML.

No, that really isn't a normal situation. How often do people buy Christmas things for miscarriages? I'm not saying it's bad that the lady did, but it isn't exactly typical. There are various other reasons the stocking may not have had the name on it, I don't see a problem with what the OP said.

# justanotherbird, your comment is invalid. Not everyone has the same "culture" or ways of "memorial". The mother just wanted to do a little something for her dead baby. I don't see anything wrong with that. So even if it's common or not, she can do whatever she wants to do. This could have had been the baby's first Christmas, if he/she was still alive.

That's not what 59 was saying, they were only saying that it wasn't OPs fault.

I never said that OP shoul have stayed quiet... I was just saying everyone has a different way of honoring someone or something. I apologize if I said something wrong.

no wayyy!! then there wouldn't be any morons to laugh at

59 I was referring to the comments by other people in this thread, not the OP. FHL As a consumer, I enjoy a little humourous banter with salesclerks. It sounds like that's exactly what she was trying to initiate. She has nothing to be ashamed of; in fact, the guilt she feels for the situation reflects her good nature. It's unfortunate, but sometimes these situations happen.
