Today, I gave a beautiful book of baby names to a friend of mine who's been trying to get pregnant for a while. She just burst into tears when she saw it. Just before meeting me, she'd found out she was sterile. FML
Collection
Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my friend told me she wanted to get pregnant. I thought that was good news, but then she said she wanted my boyfriend to be the father of her baby. FML
Today, I helped a lady give birth on the train. She was so happy she asked if she could name the baby after me, but as I told her my name she visibly turned her nose up at it, turned to her husband, and suggested naming it after his grandfather instead. FML
Today, my child-hating friend who vowed never to have any no matter what, announced that she's pregnant. I've had three IVF cycles, spent $90k in fertility treatments, and still can't conceive. FML
Today, a pregnant friend who is due in 2 weeks posted a picture of a baby on Facebook. I commented congratulations. She's still pregnant. It was a picture of her baby who died 3 years ago. FML
Today, I was selling personalised stockings at work. When handing a customer's order over to her, which had no name on, I joked, "Oooh this is a bit mysterious". She replied, "Actually, it's in memory of the baby I miscarried earlier this year." FML
Today, I had to call a parent and tell them that their special needs daughter is pregnant. FML
What's in a name?
Today, I introduced my coworker to my friend's boyfriend. When I mentioned his name, she started crying. Apparently he has the same first name as her twin brother, who died shortly after birth, so that name has become a bit of a sore spot for her. I didn't even know she had a twin. FML
Today, my husband and I told my parents that I finally managed to conceive. My mom burst into tears of joy and said how great it was that she's finally going to be a "real" grandma, all within earshot of our adopted and now-devastated daughter. FML
Today, in front of my family, my brother's wife announced that she was pregnant with their first child. Everyone joked around and said I was next. Two weeks ago I found out that I'm sterile. FML
My legacy
Today, I found out that the one who got away just had a baby, and named it after me. My current longtime girlfriend and I already decided not to have kids. FML

WTF is her problem? Just cuz she is sterile she can't adopt and then use the book then? However, she JUST found out that she was sterile, so that does impact the whole thing a lot. If this were like months later or something I would agree with #2 but since it just happened i don't. She can still use the book though, so you aren't a terrible friend OP

Was the actual book beautiful, or were the names in the book beautiful?? It makes a big difference, you know!! Next time, make sure when you are writing an FML not to make reference errors-- I, for one, am confused as shit. Thanks man

how would she use a book? I'm pretty sure you don't rename adopted children.

@ 27: There's a difference between adopting someone else's kid and having your own. With having your own, there's the feeling that you helped create something out of nothing that will one day create something of its own. I, for one, would be completely devastated if I found out that I was sterile. There's the emotional attachment that comes from physically creating a baby. I'm not saying that adoption is a bad thing and that it shouldn't be done, but it's the only option she has left now. Plus...there's the awkwardness of explaining to your child about the fact that they were, indeed, adopted.

Adoption is better than conception anyway. We need to take care of the people we have, not make more of them.

Coz everyone can afford to adopt.... You don't give someone baby gifts if they're not pregnant

yes, but she was trying to get pregnant. She was only trying to be thoughtful.

Pray for her. My teacher was also thought to be sterile but in the end it worked out.

I dont understand why she started crying. She could do so many other things with that book like reaname her self or her husband or name a pet. Your friend should consider these options. YDI for being friends with someone so emotional

More like FTL (**** their life).

Aw, that is unfortunate, but maybe she'll consider IVF if it's possible or adopting. There are so many kids out there that could benefit so much from being adopted by a loving parent.

So sorry about that. You had no way of knowing, but you should've waited until she was actually pregnant to gift her the book. Hope you also gave her a shoulder to cry on as well. You can also use the book to name pets, tell her that. A lot of people give their pets human names.

Aww:/ well, there's always adopting! Don't blame yourself, though. You didn't know, it wasn't something you could control.
