Today, I was excited to hear that I received three of my grad school recommendations in the mail from a very busy professor. They need to be submitted sealed, and of course, my nosy mom decided to open them. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I got a large envelope from a college I applied to earlier. My mom, expecting big news, made my family gather round as I opened it. It ended up being a letter of rejection from not just that school, but all three campuses of the state college. FML
Can't afford this shit
Today, I was cleaning my father's study room and wondering why I did not receive my acceptance/rejection letter from a college I really wanted. I found the acceptance letter, on his desk, also approving of a full scholarship. The deadline to confirm was a month ago. FML
Today, I found out that my dad, thinking it was an advertisement, threw away a letter from the college I applied to. FML
Today, my mom called and told me I got accepted to my first-choice college. I got really excited and asked her to read me the letter. As she started to read it, she said, "Oops... uh, nevermind." FML
Formatting issues
Today, my university professor asked us to submit anonymous course feedback. I wrote three paragraphs criticizing his lectures. Ten minutes later, I realized I'd left my full name at the bottom of the page. FML
Today, I got 3 different rejection letters mailed to me from the same college. FML
Rushed
Today, I rushed to the post office to mail an important document for the study abroad program that I'd applied for, which was due in a few days. Just as the envelope slipped out of my hand and into the mail box, I caught a glimpse of the upper right corner where there was supposed to be a stamp. FML
Today, my mom asked me to take my dad's mail to him. The "mail" was divorce papers. FML
Today, my parents gave me a letter they'd forgotten about since late last year. In it was a $30,000 scholarship to a local master's program with an application due date of two weeks ago. FML
Today, my mother decided to "help me" by throwing out the stack of papers on my desk. Unfortunately, those were all my notes for my final exams. FML

wow that sucks, hope you don't miss any important deadlines. You should definitely sit down and explain to your mom that if it doesn't say her name it's not for her

Plant a fake letter to yourself with baking soda in it so she will think she got anthrax or something. That will teach her!

I really hope you didn't take me seriously... Everyone is so serious now. Here's something fun to do! Run into a fire and scream "MOVIE!". No, I didn't mix them up.

wow your mum opened your mail... FML... build a bridge and get the *** over it.. how did this even make it through? what is happening to this website...

Lolerskaterz - you clearly don't have any experience with this, so I'll help clarify it for you: not only is it mail, it's a recommendation- schools will NOT take an opened recommendation letter, they are automatically disqualified. Also, I've had busy profs like the OP, and I can imagine how humiliating it would be to ask for another letter- some profs are really jerks about that type of thing, and I can think of a couple in my time that would have refused to write another letter, and I'm sure it's same for the OP. This is a real FYL, not a YDI, and besides the inconvenience and humiliation for the OP, it's a felony for her mom to open mail that isn't hers.
monstaber 6
Not if it's her dependent's mail, so YDI for still living with your mom going into grad school without establishing clear personal boundaries.

Opening someone else's mail is actually a crime.

put them in new envelopes?
ImaginaryFoe 1
Yeah, I must be missing something because it seems like an obvious solution. One could even print the prof's address as the return and post it again for authenticity.

The schools typically ask for the professor to sign over the seal, to make sure they haven't been opened. Unless he can forge the professor's signature, he's SOL.
WallyTheWombat 0
Does SOL mean shit outta luck? Yea, places usually require the seal not to be broken, maybe op can see the professor in person and explain the situation. It's worth a shot.

Ah, thank you, #15. I did not know that. Well, even if he's inredibly busy, he has time to sign his name. Don't read it, seal it in a new envelope and ask him to sign it. It's not like he has to re-write it. I doubt this is the first time it has ever happened.

Haha!! 26 wins. I'd honestly like to hear a practical situation where "Satellite of Love" is used without making someone laugh from cornyness :D

#28, that seems like a good solution, but it looks bad to go back to a professor and ask for them to RE SIGN a document that was supposed to be confidential. Technically, they'd be lying. =/ Also, what if they went to college far away from where they live? I go to school in Georgia and I'm from Virginia. If you aren't in school, you can't necessarily waltz in during office hours and quickly have them re-signed. This is a total FML.

The answer is no. Now you think about it.

I think you need to explain to your mum that if her name isn't on it, it's not for her and to not open. If she really wants to know what's in there, she can ask you. Hopefully you'll be able to get it sorted, I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that, I guess new envelopes or maybe asking for time to get new copies or something...

you always do a wonderful job of taking all of the previously posted comments and condensing them into one long drawn out dr. Philish comment...
laden_swallow09 35
you say that as if that's a bad thing
MissErikaHart 0
he didn't say it like it was a bad thing. and she does do a wonderful job. she's sensible and realistic
Cinn_fml 23
Well, I'm not sure how to take that in the first place. But also, I just say of what I think, chances are that there'll always be bits that other people have said/will say.

you don't even enjoy these FML's you take them in the the most boring way possible.
Cinn_fml 23
Who?
Jimboom 12
That is a federal offence to open someone else's mail. Call the cops on her. That will stop her being so nosey in the future. ;-)
WearingHats 14
Best suggestion so far.
FFML_314 12
Did you slap her? If you didn't slap her, you should kick her.
Calaraphea 16
Glad you think it's acceptable to slap and/or kick your own mother
