Today, I was at the park with my autistic son when I noticed a teenage girl imitating him by flapping her hands and walking on her toes. Fed up with children mocking my son, I went over and sternly lectured the girl's mother. Turns out, her daughter is autistic too and will be in my son's class. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Nice try, Patricia
Today, I had to deal with a lady who claimed her son was autistic to try and skip the queue. Even her son was saying he’s not autistic, and she was screaming in his face that yes he was. I happen to be genuinely autistic. Security threw her out, and I was jealous that I didn’t get to do it. FML
Stranger danger!
Today, I took my child to the park. Having been there an hour, another mum came up to me and we started talking. She then told me that one kid had been harassing her children, pointing to my child. When she asked which one was mine I pointed to a random kid. It was hers. FML
Cut it off
Today, I took my kids to the beach. My autistic son decided it was a good idea to pretend he was drowning. I tried to tell onlookers he was fine and not to worry. My son popped out of the water and laughed hysterically at them. FML
Put that in your pipe and smoke it
Today, I was shopping when I overheard a woman telling an employee that she was buying an iPad for her 5-year-old son. Annoyed, I turned around and ranted about how he should have more age appropriate toys. Then she explained that her son is autistic and will be using the iPad to communicate. FML
And then I go and spoil it all…
Today, I was ecstatic my autistic son went on a play date. It went wonderfully and my son was happier than he’s ever been. Sadly, the dad was such a damn creep he hit on me every time the kids were out of earshot. I don’t want my son to lose his only friend but the dad makes me so uncomfortable. FML
Today, my high school speech therapist introduced me to the other autistic kid in school without fully informing either of us. We got into a fist fight because we each thought the other guy was imitating us. FML
Today, my son's first impression of our new neighborhood was to be yelled at by the first kid he tried to introduce himself to, because my son was on the edge of their lawn. Half-an-hour later, I got a lecture at the corner store, because the clerk thinks vaccinations caused my son's autism. FML
Today, my 4-year-old daughter stood up to a bully in the mall. I was the one who was getting bullied. FML
Today, while out walking with my son in a stroller, a couple passed by and the girl smiled sweetly at him. It made me really happy, until we'd passed and I heard her say, "What? You're supposed to smile at babies, even if they look weird." FML
Today, a girl I'd been crushing on for a little while and I were talking about autism. Some of the last words she said were "I try to not find autistic people so fucking annoying, but I can't help it. But can you blame me?” I'm autistic. FML

I understand why you'd be mad.. A close family member of mine is autistic and it makes me very angry if people imitate him.

That's not an FML, you were just being a good parent. Awkward, maybe, but not bad.

In yet another response to pimpin88, the trouble is, you DO have to make certain accomdations for a person with autism. But in the same way you have to make adjustments for someone in a wheelchair. You can't refuse to put in a ramp saying, "Learn to walk! I'm not going to enable your handicap by putting in a ramp! I'm HELPING you! NOW WALK DAMMIT!!" And using the same analogy, you wouldn't confine someone who uses a wheelchair to their house because they have to ask people to make a slightly wider space when moving through a crowd. The same goes for those with autism. You shouldn't confine them to their house until they are, by your standards, "normal". Just because he does things other people may not normally do doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed in public, as he is not a danger to anybody. In fact, those who grow up in families who refuse to accept who their child is and what handicaps (s)he must deal with usually end up confused, bitter, and sometimes violent, because they don't understand why people are so different from them. Autism is not mental retardation. People with autism often have difficulty making the connections between people, such as people to people, themselves to people, and a person to themselves. Those who are accepted and "exposed" to the world, even if they are not "normal" get a better grasp on the day-to-day interactions. However, even though her son may be able to handle his handicap, others, especially those who do not know him, are not. And it gets old. Can you imagine if people went around making fun of your brother everyday you went out? And if you were unable to say anything, because it may upset him? It's the same with the OP. Except he can understand when people are making fun of him. As for your brother, I really am sorry for your loss. And I know it seems like everything everyone else moans and complains about is trivial, because they are still alive, their loved ones are all still alive, and they just don't see how blessed their lives really are. And usually, that is the case. But to live with the fact that your child has an incurable handicap and have to suffer through watching him struggle through it, and through the torment from other people, and being unable to help is also one of the hardest things to go through. So please, have some sensitivity. There is, as always, a time and a place for everything. And a short quip for all the trolls. I understand all the great joy and immeasureable amount of fun and self-worth you get from posting comments like "YDI 4 b3i||g a //m4n!!" Don't. Not on this one. Go one FML up. It won't make a difference. And to the troll note in pimpin88's comment. No one gives a shit about your sports teams. They don't validate anything. Actually they do the opposite. I hope you tear your IT band.

Sorry for the length of my reply... especially if you have the iphone/ipod app. I feel your pain, and now, I've added to it.

Not an FML. Again the other parent would probably understand, as said, she is in the same boat.
