Today, I was at my job as a cashier when a man called me his "Grocery Slave." I was almost offended, but then I thought about my salary. I am a Grocery Slave. FML

Yeah, I live in a town with 4 colleges in it and nearby, so it's very difficult to find a job. I've applied literally EVERYWHERE that I could even remotely be considered for, and this was the only option I had, so I took it, and I'm very grateful for it! Even if people tend to act like idiots towards me

I worked in retail for years. Retail employees ARE slaves and subject to the whims of others, unfortunately.

time for a new job?

Yes, because grocery cashiers have the skills that qualify them for lucrative work in high finance, space travel, quantum physics and brain surgery.
GigaPudding_fml 24
Yes, in fact a lot of people work in stores while they're studying. Plus, working in a store doesn't say anything about how smart you are. Try not to be so judgemental, please.

Still a better job then being a sex slave
myeviltwin 20
Naw being a sex slave probably pays better :p

Intelligence is irrelevant (but not uncorrelated) to qualifications, and qualifications doesn't necessarily imply opportunity. He might not be able to get a new job because of a lack of opening for his skills, and whatever his skills it doesn't mean he's smart or dumb.
ehrmagahd 15
SHE. I'm a woman. :( But thank you. I can't get a better job because I'm 17. But I do have a 3.9 GPA and I'm graduating high school early. So I've hopefully got good things ahead of me.

i know many people work there when they're going to school but i was just saying there are other minimum wage jobs..

Well put 62!

I'm in your exact position OP

#49, in general, you are right, but this is the FML comments section where judgmental, snotty pronouncements are the currency of the realm. It's all about context.

I'm working in a grocery store because I'm taking 15 credits a semester and it's the only job I can find with a flexible enough schedule. Plus it's close to both my home and school. People look down on everyone who works in a grocery store and it sucks. We get treated like sub-human trash too many times in a day to count.

I work at a cinema called Showcase de Lux. We all joke about being Showcase's bitch because of the rediculous errands they have us run all the time.

cool story bro.

Keep the remaining change on your foot and ask him to collect it. "Slavery! No No"
Hiimhaileypotter 53
Huh? Is it just me, or does that make no sense at all?
rattusrattus 19
It's not just you. The words are familiar and they are (mostly) grammatically correct, but together they make no sense at all.
Onmyzephyr 5
Hey, I get a kick out of pradip's comments.

My foot!!!

Where else do you keep change besides your foot!

When ever I see a retail FML, I get reminded of the one were someone shit in the changing room...

Not true at all. You're not a slave by any definition. The job may suck but you can quit any time you want. From someone who's had these kinds of jobs, I know how terrible they can be, but I also know that if its that bad, I can literally walk right out the door.
cristy91 33
You may be able to walk out, but sometimes that's not a viable option. People aren't really hiring now (at least where I am) so you have to stick to your job no matter how unfairly they treat you because, well, you really need the money. Tuition increases, gas prices, and grant/scholarship cuts mean you keep what you get.
myeviltwin 20
Yeah just walk right out of your apartment while you are at it. Live on the streets and eat out of dumpsters. Yeah low wage employees are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FREE. I used to work in retail and they purposely keep you as low as they can while scheduling you odd hours to prevent you from finding a better job (or even holding a second crappy one) or even going to school to better yourself. Retail and all mcjobs are as close to real slavery as you can come in this nation. Time for a resurgence of the labor movement in this country unless you would like to live in third world conditions before the end of your lifetime.

That's such a bullshit excuse. Your employer is not obligated to give you a job or pay you a giant sum of money for no reason. You wanna know how expensive running a business is? And how often they go under? Start one. You don't think your job pays enough, find a better one. If no one wants to pay you a six figure salary for saying "you want fries with that," then maybe it's you who's lacking. Go to school, take out a loan (it's an investment), major in something that'll actually help you get a job (not renaissance Italian poetry). Is it hard? You bet. But that's the only way it'll happen. You are not entitled to anything. No one owes you anything. Your life is your problem. Make the most of it.
ICastillo 25
That guy is a douche bag OP don't mind him. Well if you're not feeling your job, look for a new one.
ydi_4_suking 20
It sucks its so hard to try to find a new job. I've been working with cars for a while that its hard to find a job in a different field.

Yeah I know what you mean, I quit my old job in January. And I couldn't find one for shit, but I got hired last month to my new job. So I understand what you mean OP. Keep your head up things will get better for sure.
mct_1087 27
You should've gone to college then.
Megan98 18
Well at least you're getting payed, being that you're considered a slave.
PenguinBitch 44
OP is getting payed with wheat rations. Get promoted and they'll throw in a goat or two.
ehrmagahd 15
Yes, I would kill for a goat. Wait....then I'd have to feed the goat :/
BellaBelle_fml 23
You're only 17, you have so much time ahead of you to maybe go to college and decide what you want to do in life. This is only a passing phase, usually, and that is only if you choose to go further in life. Keep your chin up and look forward to what great things that life has in store for you! :)
lilhellian 27
Don't worry you shall become the baggage slave soon!
ehrmagahd 15
I already was before I became cashier xD
cristy91 33
Just don't become a manager. Cashiers may be pretty bad, but managers have mildly better pay for about 3x the work. Just focus on finding better things and move up when you can :)
ehrmagahd 15
True, true! Thing is though, I hate not doing anything. I get bored a lot a work lately because I don't feel it's enough of a challenge
riseagainstbabyy 4
Supervisors at the company I work for make almost three times as much as checkers do. If I choose to stay with them once I graduate university I can become a store manager and earn over 100K per year. It's definitely not as bad as one would think.
SUPA_TOLL_CAL 6
At least you have your five finger discount.
howdeedoo 22
I think it would be better for OP to look for a new job rather than resort to stealing
tacojauns 45
I like to make a mental image of this (man) "put my stuff in plastic bags Grocery Slave" (You) Excuse me??? (Wait for a sec (thinking)) never mind and just continue checking out the groceries
ehrmagahd 15
That's almost exactly how it went actually. And it was sad to watch. Hahah.
ICastillo 25
They took our joobbss!! I don't why , but this reminded me of the South Park episode when the people from the future work for way cheap.
accioshannon 17
At least you've got a job! :)
