Today, I tried helping an old lady with her groceries. When I asked if she needed help she smiled. When I took one of her bags she yelled. I didn't know she was deaf. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, a deaf customer came to my work. In an attempt to connect with him I introduced myself in sign language. He just rolled his eyes and pointed at my name tag. FML
Today, at the supermarket, an old lady asked for directions to the produce aisle. Having read way too many stories lately on this very site about awful elderly folks, I was wary, but helped her out. She gave me an awkward hug in thanks, lifting my wallet in the process, as I later found out. FML
OK then…
Today, I’m hard of hearing and rely partly on lip-reading. At a grocery store, the cashier asked me something I didn’t quite catch, so I smiled and nodded. Apparently, she had asked if I wanted to donate to a charity, so I ended up donating a couple of bucks to a cause I still don’t know the name of. FML
Helper Blues
Today, I asked an elderly customer at my work if she needed help with her groceries. She responded, "I normally would, but I'm afraid you'll eat all the groceries." FML
Carry her home
Today, I helped an elderly woman push her grocery cart around the store, and look for her vehicle after she'd paid. After we spent ages wandering around trying to find her car, she remembered that she'd taken the bus today. FML
Today, I was helping an older lady return her previously bought items to customer service. As she walked away and said "Thanks," I tried to say "You're welcome" and "No problem" at the same time. I ended up saying "Your problem". She scowled at me. FML
Today, I was standing in a queue when an old lady turned, looked straight at me, and asked me to hold her bag. Confused, I took a hold of it. She started screaming for help claiming I was stealing her shopping. Turns out, she was talking to her husband behind me. FML
Today, I saw an elderly woman struggling to reach the top shelf in my local grocery store, so I went over and asked if she needed help. She then accused me of flirting with her and had me escorted from the property. FML
Help!
Today, I was strolling past an old women when from behind me she called, "Can you help me get the rest of the groceries out of the car?" I approached the car, and helped her unload bags. She began hitting me, screaming, "SOMEONE IS STEALING MY THINGS". She was actually asking her son in the car. FML
Foiled
Today, I was at the airport, when a lady came up and loudly asked if she could sit next to me. I have serious social issues, so to avoid having to talk to her, I pretended I was deaf and couldn't hear her. She immediately broke out her sign language skills. FML

I'm Deaf and I actually voted FYL because it's her own fault for just smiling. When you said something to her she should have made some signal that she didn't understand.

#1... I'm sorry i don't speak complicated hand gestures... you apparently do... but only 11% of the US population has any use for it... and no one is gonna randomly walk up to some old lady and do... do whatever it is your saying to do. Most old ladies would look at you like an idiot then walk to the nearest police station, and say, "Their's some crazy person in the street making their hands dance" ... no I don't think that anyone is gonna do that. lol

This is stupid...my grammar school had a deaf class in every grade and we learned sign language as a class...also you do t have to just walk up to someone and sign "help" you can say is and sign it at the same time...I do this all the time without even thinking...

Only 11% of the population? Gee... We should never try to communicate with people who don't speak our language. This is the most ignorant thing I've read all day. ASL is a language. Not "making your hands dance." Idiot.

It's not your fault, don't feel bad, I just don't get how it wasn't obvious you were trying to help

Yes it will, although technically it's just a fist not a thumbs up in BSL.
