Today, I told my parents I don't really like children and probably won't have any in the future. They sat me down and gave me a lecture on how people who hate kids are heartless. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
It's not a phase, mom!
Today, my parents disowned me because I told them I don’t want kids. FML
Good advice
Today, I was advised to never have kids because they ruin your life, ruin your body, cost you money, stress you out, and the end result is they become an adult you don’t even really like or would choose to spend time with if you weren’t related. It was both my parents who gave me this advice. FML
#Childfree
Today, my mother-in-law asked me when my fiancé and I were going to start having children. When I told her we weren't planning on having any, she went on a tirade about how selfish and cold I am for denying her precious grandchildren. Now she hates me. FML
Family man
Today, my parents disowned me because I threw out my wife and son after I found out that the kid wasn't mine. According to them, I'm a "heartless asshole." FML
No kidding
Today, I told my mom that having watched my sister ruin her life having kids who grew into brats with criminal records before their teens, I refused to ruin my life the same way and will be childless. I then turned to leave and they were in the doorway, my sister and her two brats. I got slapped. FML
WTF dad?
Today, my husband ranted about how children are awful, and parents who claim they love their kids are complete liars, and if everyone admitted that we hated our kids and resented them for existing, there’d be a lot more happy childless couples. We don’t even have kids for him to hate this much. WTF? FML
The Pope thinks you're selfish
Today, as part of my job, I had to watch a few 5 year-olds while their parents were busy with my manager. It only confirmed my choice to never have children, and yet my mother still insists I should have one, because once they exist and I love them, I’ll see how silly my choice to not have them is. FML
Consequences
Today, I reluctantly went to a family get together. My nosy aunt decided to try to lecture me on why I should spank my kids. That’s great coming from a woman who was a teen mom, had kids with 3 different guys, and now has grown kids that hate her guts. Yeah I truly need lessons on how to be a mom. FML
Prejudice
Today, I found the courage to tell my parents about my boyfriend. They simply reacted by lecturing me about how much he'll ruin my life, and how much they don't like him. They haven't met him yet. FML
Slight overreaction?
Today, my husband and I recently decided not to have kids, because neither of us like children. Learning this, my dad wrote me out of his will and my mother swore on the Bible in church that she’s never going to speak to me again until I obey God's word and start multiplying. FML

Which is worse? Realizing you don't like children and having them anyway to please someone and end up resenting the kid(s) or to just not have kids and disappoint your parents? I'm pretty sure it's the first one.

You and your partners decision, not theirs.

I can sympathise, people can be very weird about the whole children thing. I suppose because it's such a massive, life-impacting thing to do people feel a bit threatened by the idea of another equally valid way of living their life. I'm undecided about whether I want children or not, for some reason people seem to think this means 'I am just kidding myself that I have a choice, I will definitely want children in the future and totally want to hear your input on this'.

Even when you are decided, and have decided against it, people will still be happy to offer their input to tell you how wrong your decision is and that you'll change your mind. I really don't understand why people can't just butt out and let others live their own lives.

I feel you. It's surprising how society still pressures people into having partners/children. Some people immediately try to "figure out" what is wrong with you when you say you want to stay single or mention you don't want kids. Not to mention people who get angry at you when you say you don't want kids... You can clearly see the frustration they have. They thought having a family is an obligation, something expected and just how things are. So they think you shouldn't have the freedom to choose not to have kids because they think they didn't have it.

It isn't any of their ******* business if you have kids or not. You don't want kids? You take measures to not have them, and have a plan of action in mind if a pregnancy occurs in any relationship you have. You don't owe them grand kids, and you aren't heartless for disliking kids. There are too many humans on Earth as it stands, and considering the state of the world and all the things that are projected to go catastrophically wrong within the next hundred or so years, adding more people that would have to live through that sounds morally dubious. If they have issues with you not being a space to the genetic drive to reproduce, they can make their own bloody attempts at it and see if they can have another child. Especially since it sounds like they want you to have children so they can do the "fun" parts of child rearing without having to put forth any actual care of effort.

That's ******* bullshit- Heartless people have children all the time (my mother is a perfect example). Reproduction isn't the only path to a fulfilling life and it's certainly not a duty or obligation. Decisions like these are up to you and your partner. It's no one else's business and it's way out of line for someone to guilt you, judge you or punish you because your values aren't the same as theirs. If your parents nag you in the future as to why you don't have children yet, tell them it's because you're heartless.

Not making a judgement on how you feel about kids, you still deserve this. You should know your parents well enough to know how they feel about grandkids in the future. So having this conversation, especially unless cornered into it, brings the reaction you got. If you don't want those conversations, don't provide the catalyst for them.

@135 If Op should know her parents well enough to know that they want grandchildren, then his/her parents should know Op well enough to have known that they don't want kids and should have been better prepared for the conversation.

I said the same thing for years, now I want to right all the wrongs my parents did with my own children, when I'm not 20 of course.

People who try to coerce others into having kids just because it's the thing to do are heartless.
