Today, I received the Christmas gift I bought for my sister in the mail. I also received a nearly $200 bill for shipping fees, taxes, etc. for a $50 blanket from Canada. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, the package I've waited for months for finally arrived. It turned out it wasn't for me, but for my sister, who bought the same thing only 2 weeks ago. When I called, the company told me they received my payment, but that there were no more of the item in stock. FML
Today, I received a late Christmas present from my estranged father. I was really excited, having neither seen nor heard from him in nearly two years. It was a $200 gift card for a store that only exists in Canada. I don't live in Canada. Not even close. FML
Today, while doing our Christmas shopping, my sister showed me a product that she really hated. The same one I bought her for Christmas. FML
Today, the first gift I opened was from my uncle. It was $80 in clothes that I'd bought for myself a week earlier. FML
Today, I gave my friend a $5 VR set that I purchased from the dollar store for Christmas. I received a $60 gift card. Later, I realized I left the receipt in the package. FML
Today, I gave over $100 to my online friend in presents for Christmas, only to find out he can't use any because of his strict parents. FML
Today, my Christmas tree was finally shipped. FML
Gimme my stuff
Today, I learned that last week, the UPS man gave my package to my neighbor for safekeeping. It was over five-hundred dollars' worth of merchandise. My neighbor left for Canada on Saturday. FML
Today, I was missing $20 from my wallet, so I decided to ask my sister if she had taken it. Her response? "That reminds me, I need to borrow another 50." She has a job. That was my Christmas money. FML
Thanks but no thanks
Today, I received three big boxes from my mother in law, containing expensive cookware. I was puzzled, because I know that she hates me. Turns out she mailed them to us by mistake. Not only did she not get us anything, but I now have to pay to ship the boxes to her neighbor. FML

How did you order it? If it was online, wouldn't you have known the total cost beforehand?

It's the same here in Canada ordering from the states. Duty on top of exchange rate. A 50$ blanket from u.s can be 150$

That's why you mark it as "gift."

gifts don't help the exchange rate. and shipping is always more expensive even if it is a gift. gift status would only help the duties.

It's illegal for companies to mark things as a gift when sending to customers

The company sending it has nothing to do with import taxes, that happens at the other end. Some of the fees are also totally random (at least in the UK) so you cant predict them.

Yeah we get dragged over the coals all the time up here in Canada too eh, anything listed in American dollars can be pretty much at least doubled to become the amount in Canadian dollars that we have to pay in order to buy the item... And our politicians are too brainless/spineless to do anything about it, to make life easier for Canadians... If you are upset about the charges on your blanket, be thankful you don't have our gas prices... ~$1.20/litre, which is $4.54/gallon... But, thank you for shopping Canadian, and I apologize that our government made it so expensive for you.

$1.20 a litre for fuel is a cheap week in Australia. More often than not it's closer to $1.65

Super Canadian polite of you to apologize for your government. Although we Americans have to do it all too often now too...

That's expensive gas? Here in the UK it's twice that...
KJRowling 13
We're up to £1.20 in the UK, which is Can$2.04

I misread this, saying that it was a gift to you from your sister. Now that's a hefty FML.

You got to mark it as "gift" or "samples" to avoid taxes and tariffs. Everybody knows that.....

Gifts don't help exchange rates or shipping.
KJRowling 13
Companies aren't legally allowed to mark things as gifts.

As a Canadian I gotta say- im sorry to hear that, eh. That’s just insane. But also we understand the pain. Our dollar is absolutely horrifying so if we buy anything USD we can usually hear the cries of our bank accounts as we press the checkout button.

It sucks but why didn't you check shipping costs before you ordered?
TwentyFourBeerz 18
Why didnt you just go to the mall or your local department store. cuz surely that blanket wouldn't be worth $200.

I don't understand how you would get a bill for shipping. if you bought the item on line or from a catalog shipping would be charged and paid before shipping.

How the h*** does something like that happen? I’m in CTand order from UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand all the time. Full shipping, export fees, customs, etc is always laid at checkout before I confirm the order and charged once I do confirm the purchase.
