Today, I realized the only way I can pay my bills this month is if I steal from my 8 year old's birthday money. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Desperate
Today, I was looking for a job. I was so desperate for gas money to drive around town that I had to steal $20 from my sister. She's only 10 years old. FML
Today, realizing how poor I am, I decided to steal gas. The only place I was brave enough to steal from was my parents' lawn mower. FML
Today, I realized that my 5 year old son has more money saved up in his piggy bank than I have in my actual bank account. FML
Piggy banked
Today, I discovered my own mother has been stealing money from me for months when I opened my savings box to find it empty. FML
Rip off
Today, I learned that my daughter pocketed the money I'd paid so she could go to college. FML
Mismanagement
Today, my parents accidentally bounced some checks through a miscommunication. They now owe the bank $700 and can't afford groceries, which means we're relying on me, a 17-year-old girl who works at McDonald's 2 days a week, to get us by for the next few weeks. FML
Today, my mom cleaned out my bank account, saying my "no-good dad" owes her child support and that she'll get it one way or another. FML
Today, my mom tried to get me to shoplift. From the dollar store. FML
Outrageous
Today, I found out that my grandma has been sending me birthday money every year. My mom just steals it before I ever see it. FML
Mismanagement
Today, I discovered that my mother has been stealing from me to cover her mountain of debt. I’m barely making ends meet as it is. When I confronted her, she had the gall to suggest I get a second job to support her. FML

You need to provide. Money can be replaced later.

I hate the idiots on here that are telling this person they need to learn how to manage their money. You have no idea what their situation is. They could have planned out their finances and there still just wasn't enough money.

It's almost as bad as the people who say the eight-year-old will understand why mommy is taking away their saved money.

@34 As a person who has experienced periods where there just wasn't enough money, I object to being called an idiot: the fact is that planning DID fail here. I agree that shit does indeed happen, but if you cannot absorb one bad month or if EVERY month is a bad month either way then you need to go back to the drawing board.

#40 I've borrowed money from my four year old and she understood so I'm pretty sure an eight year old would understand. #44 You have no idea what OP's situation is so why are you assuming that it happens to them every month? And planning doesn't always go as planned, it's life not a virtual reality.

@47, Please read my comment, as I never assumed that. I said 'if you cannot absorb one bad month or if EVERY month is a bad month'. Don't criticize if you cannot understand what I am saying. The fact is, I have lived it. You are right that a plan sometimes fails, but when it does then it is still a call to reevaluate the plan, not to just shrug your shoulders and say 'life sucks.'

@47, moreover, whether you feel it is a planning failure is not the point. The real point is that my opinion, which is not intended as a bash at OP but what I feel is a rational and constructive view, does NOT make me an idiot. 34 is being very disrespectful and rude to posters who are trying to be constructive. Even if the she disagrees with our point of view, it is no excuse for calling us names.

People are still assuming that OP didn't plan, as you have, and maybe OP doesnt have time to reevauluate that plan before the bills need to be paid. "Its called financial responsibility" "suck it up and ask friends and family" "make better plans.". All of these comments are from your own post. Do you plan a storm making a tree fall on your house? New tire going flat? Anything like this that would screw someone for the month?

Yeah at that age I was learning how to balance a checkbook at school. I would definitely understand and I will make sure my kids do too at that age.

My Parents would do it and just tell me my present was having a house to live in.......

What the heck is wrong with you people. Stealing is telling no matter if you plan to give it back or not. Borrow from a family member or a friend but to steal from your own child?
Rainbow_Princess 16
How is it stealing to borrow from your child? I have borrowed money off my kids and they didn't care. You know why? Because it always comes back, sometimes with interest and they often get bought stuff just because I feel like spending it on them. Do they know the value of money? Yes they do. They also know the value of a roof over their head.

#38 didn't say borrowing is the same a stealing. Op said they were going to steal the money from their child, not borrow it. And yes, taking money from your kid without telling them IS stealing, not borrowing.

Gonna get down voted, maybe should have saved money other places first or sell something off you don't need. Seriously don't steal from a hold that's sad

I am sorry, and I know life is hard, but that is why we call it financial responsibility. We are all responsible for ensuring we have the resources to cover our lives, and that includes the unexpected expenses, whether paid from a savings cushion, credit, etc. Whether this was a one time or a recurring issue dictates how serious this really is, but in either case this does indicate a failure of planning. One time issue? Suck it up and ask friends and family to help float you, and borrow from your kid if absolutely necessary (borrow, not steal), and make better plans for next time. If this is a recurring issue? That is a strong sign that you need to make a major overhaul to your financial life. While my post may sound critical, I only mean it in the most constructive way I can. I have been there, and never intend to return. FYL OP. I hope it gets better.

Or you could explain the situation to your kid, ask to borrow the money and pay them back later.

I've made a couple apps but getting raised by a single mom can be tough so I always give her some of the money I make. It's a mutual thing at this point.

You're a good person. Some day you'll look back and feel good about yourself and all the help you gave. It may not be much to you, but it means the world to her. She had given up so much for you, and just being willing to help shows how much you care about her and the family.

Don't feel bad about it, life happens.

its not stealing if you plan to pay him back later

This one really hits home, I went through that when I was younger.
