Mismanagement
Today, I discovered that my mother has been stealing from me to cover her mountain of debt. I’m barely making ends meet as it is. When I confronted her, she had the gall to suggest I get a second job to support her. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I discovered my own mother has been stealing money from me for months when I opened my savings box to find it empty. FML
Today, after months of helping my mother with bills because she claimed she had no money, I found out she makes way more than what I do. She just wanted my money for alcohol and drugs. FML
Today, I slipped money into my mother's purse after she refused to let me pay for lunch. She caught me in the act and thought I was stealing money from her instead. FML
Today, my mom decided to go against every promise she's made to everyone once again and left us in financial ruin. How? She took advantage of my kindness, and didn't pay any of the money she owes me for driving my car, and for so much more. I'm more than $2,000 in debt now. FML
Today, my mom stole my holiday money because she found it “near her bag” in my kitchen and “assumed it was hers” and she must have “forgotten it was in there all this time.” I demanded it back, but she’d already spent it on hair, nails, shoes, and a date night with dad. She won’t pay me back either. FML
Today, I found out my mom took around $2,500 from my savings account to pay off my sister's college tuition. She recently flunked out of her studies and won't be returning to college anyway. FML
Today, my nosy mom opened my mail and saw how much I have in my account. She confiscated my debit card because she’s convinced no one could save that much working part time at Burger King and is demanding I confess where so much money came from. I'm moving out. Fuck her. FML
Today, I told my mom I wasn't doing very good mentally and I was looking for some support. She decided to remind me of all of the things I still haven't paid her back for. I'm now an unpaid loan, not her daughter. FML
Today, I found out my mom has been stealing from me to pay for Scientology courses. FML
Today, my mother asked me if she could borrow $200. Being the lovely daughter I am, I gave her my bank card to withdraw it herself. She gambled it away and maxed my bank account out. I had $1500 saved. FML

It's a good idea! You ought to get a second job as a debt collector. That way, you can get paid to harass your mom for her debt, then use that to pay the debt, for which you'll get bonus pay. If I'm doing the math right, you could be a millionaire in a few months. Brilliant!

That's nonsense. You don't inherit debt in the United States. OP does need to look out for identity theft and to be prepared to call the cops on the mother.

try to find some pro bono legal aid. it is entirely possible depending on where you live that if she passes away you will inherit the debt

Good luck with that. Bono only gives away the free legal aid on New Year's Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday. His office is hard to find because it's where The Streets Have No Name.

Get out of there! Let mom sink or swim on her own if she’s stealing from you…

Stealing is wrong no doubt about it. But I think there is a difference between if she got into debt because of drugs, to if she got into debt because she was paying for his school. Could be that the debt is related to him, which is why she thought it was morally ok to get money from her son to cover it. And again stealing is wrong, but if my parents would have needed my help because of health or some very bad luck I would have seriously considered how do I provide help and support. After all they supported me for many years of my life.

If Mom needs help financially, she can reach out to him, explain her situation, and ask for his help. Blatantly stealing from him (or anyone else) is unacceptable. Especially since it runs counter to the values Mom taught her son. The argument about her paying for college and being owed money in return doesn't exactly apply. Mom presumably chose to pay for her son's college, and perhaps her son may feel compelled to aid her in return. But it she's going to be outright stealing and then have the fall to expect him to get a second job to support her, he's under no obligation.
