Today, I once again told my son he needed a job and a girlfriend because I simply could not keep him in my house anymore. He yelled, "No, I can do whatever I want!" Then went back to playing video games. He's 38. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Gamers rise up
Today, despite the fact that I've lived alone for four years, and have a well-paid job, my father is still whining about, "Why am I still playing video games at age 32?" FML
Authoritarian regime
Today, after my husband yet again failed to complete his To-Do list, I took away his Xbox and PlayStation and told him he could have them back once the list was done. He stared at me and said, "No. You're not my mother. Give them back and we will talk like adults." FML
I'm a rebel, mom!
Today, my son is going through a rebellious phase. He's taken to wearing leather and chains, listening to death metal music all day in his room alone, and screaming at me in public places. He was fired from his part-time job for swearing at customers. My son is 29 years old. FML
Sounds like he's got it all figured out
Today, my son apparently has no interest in having a life. He goes from his tiny one-bed flat to work, then back home again to play with his computer. It’s a good job, so he can afford a life, but he has no friends, never dates or goes anywhere, he even gets his shopping delivered. What can I do? FML
Today, I found out my son has been sneaking out of his room at night to see his girlfriend. He's a fully-grown 23-year-old man with a job and his own car. He doesn't need to sneak out. What an idiot. FML
Teenage Riot
Today, my son had a screaming meltdown because I told him to clean his own room and that I refuse to be treated like his personal maid. He’s 16. FML
Family matters
Today, in response to the guy whose son told him to fuck off for disturbing his one day off a week, my son spent literally his entire savings account for a deposit on a shitbox one bedroom house because he’s sick of his dad finding him things to do every ten minutes, and I don’t even blame him. FML
Micromanagement
Today, my son screamed at me to fuck off. Apparently, because he only gets one day off a week, he’s sick of me saving up all my projects and forcing him to help me on that one day. He’s now barricaded himself in his room with a big DO IT YOURSELF on the door. FML
Mixed messages
Today, I learned that my wife lets our son play video games while I'm at work to "keep him out of her hair." We had agreed that he was forbidden from gaming until his grades came up, but apparently she can't be bothered to actually parent. FML
He got game
Today, my son told me he's had 5 boyfriends and is currently working to improve himself before getting into another relationship. When I was his age, I was still single. My son has more game than I do. FML

Did you ever think about addressing this problem a little earlier?

YDI for letting it get that far. Just throw his stuff out and change the locks. The guy is 38 for ****'s sake.

Maybe no girl would want to date him, ever thought about that?

Wow, I would have kicked him out years ago. Someone like that needs a reality check. Kick his ass out already.

You have no right to dictate his love life. What does getting a girlfriend have to do with independence? A job is fair enough to expect after he graduates college, but he doesn't HAVE to find a woman. Maybe he doesn't want to; ever think of that? And what impact would it have anyway? At best, he would move out and then mooch off her instead. The job is the only important piece here. Lay off his lack of romantic pursuits.

If he had a social life, let us say a relationship, he would strive to make it work and hang up the controllers. Also, he would be determined to get a job to go one dates, and who knows save for a ring one day. Sounds like OP has the sons welfare in mind, but is way too giving. OP needs to sever parent / child relationship, and treat son like a man. Toss him out and hope he lands on his feet.

38? that sounds a little bit exaggerated.

A job maybe, but he's never going to get a girlfriend. A job is a stretch even. My suggestion is, while he's asleep or absorbed in a game - start putting his shit on the curb. Change the locks. When he goes out to get his shit, lock all the doors. If he starts kicking up a fuss, call the police.
