Today, my son is going through a rebellious phase. He's taken to wearing leather and chains, listening to death metal music all day in his room alone, and screaming at me in public places. He was fired from his part-time job for swearing at customers. My son is 29 years old. FML

Today, I once again told my son he needed a job and a girlfriend because I simply could not keep him in my house anymore. He yelled, "No, I can do whatever I want!" Then went back to playing video games. He's 38. FML
Today, my teen son came home in a terrible mood because his girlfriend won’t listen to him. I thought he meant conversation-wise, but he meant she refused to obey his commands about what clothes and makeup she wears, who she can talk to, where she can go, and so forth. My son is an asshole. FML
Today, my son wears all dark clothes, has gotten evil looking tattoos, and worships the devil. It was kinda cute when he was 13, slightly concerning when he turned 18, but now he’s 30 and I’m unsure if I should be more accepting of his lifestyle or just plain old shit scared. FML
Today, and for the last 4 days, my 19-year-old son has been wearing a metal full face skull helmet and a black robe, and has renamed himself Beast. He also bought a sword from god knows where and refuses to leave the house, because the outside scares him. I may need an exorcist. FML
Today, my 14-year-old son's pathetic rebellion came to a head. He ran away from home, leaving a note saying he hates me and was leaving forever to be part of a gang his friends had formed. He came back an hour later crying. His whole gang had gotten mugged, which he somehow blamed me for. FML
Today, my son threw the biggest fit in history about going to the dentist. He broke a whole stack of plates, overflowed the bathtub, let the dog loose, and kicked his father when he tried to calm him down. My son is 17. FML
Today, my son had a screaming meltdown because I told him to clean his own room and that I refuse to be treated like his personal maid. He’s 16. FML
Today, my son finally revealed the reason he was always blasting music as a teenager was to drown out the sound of his father and I arguing. FML
Today, my son turned 18. He now calls me by my first name instead of "dad" and refuses to stop. FML
Today, my punishment for my 14 year-old troublemaker son seems to have badly backfired. My husband and I sent him to live with my strict disciplinarian father for a while, and not only has he changed, but he loves it there and refuses to come home. My dad is on his side. I don't know what to do. FML

Times have changed sadly. What used to be out the house by the age of 18-25 has now become more 23-30. While it makes sense, due to the economy and low paying jobs a a young age, and college expenses, living on your own can be tough. Parents are definitely good resources if you have them available. Anyway, back to the FML. If he brings up the "I don't want you treating my like a kid anymore" bull, tell him it's because he's actig like a little kid. Black leather and chains is a good look, but the attitude is total crap. He probably just wants attention. Keep an eye on him, he might vandalize. How fun, right?

While it is more normal for kids to live with their parents longer that does not excuse his behavior. I have an older cousin who is 28 that lives with his parents, but is otherwise pretty independent and doesn't go through immature phases. The OP's son is.. this is just sad. Wow.

OP, that really doesn't sound normal. It sounds like he may have some serious emotional problems. You should certainly consider kicking him out if he lives at home, to encourage self-sufficiency, but if he has an underlying serious problem, that won't fix too much. While he is an adult and you can't force him to do anything (unless you bargain with the shelter and food you provide him,) you can try to get him some help. That sounds very frustrating, though, and I am sorry for you.
