Today, I had to explain to several young children why asking the new blind girl to play hide and seek with them is inappropriate. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, while life-guarding, I had to explain to teenage boys that shoving objects up each others' butts and complaining that someone was giving them anal was inappropriate at a family facility in front of kids under the age of 10. FML
Today, I found myself arguing with a 6-year-old over a game of tag. FML
Today, I had to profusely apologize to a woman after my six year old son decided to crawl between her legs at the supermarket, then look up her skirt and loudly ask why she didn't have any panties on. FML
Today, I had to explain to my son why it is not okay to slap old women's butts. He's 16. FML
What is wrong with you?
Today, I had to take my daughter home from school because she had been caught flashing the boys during class. I tried to explain to her that it wasn't an appropriate way to act or behave but she interrupted me, "Mom, you don't even understand." You're right. I don't. FML
Today, I had to explain to my 65-year-old mother that it is inappropriate for her to walk around in front of me in her underwear. Her response? "Too bad." FML
Today, I was babysitting a 4-year-old, and we decided to play a game of hide and seek. Before he started to count, he looked me in the eyes and said that if I hid in his spot, he'd murder me with a knife when he grows up. I have to babysit this kid for the rest of the summer. FML
Kids these days…
Today, a student told me to fuck off. I work with 3 year-olds. FML

Today, I had to deal with a snobby rich woman who asked me to cure her daughter's "unhealthy obsession" with playing outside instead of watching TV with the rest of the family. She called me a liar when I said playing outside is a normal thing for a 6 year-old child to do. FML
Today, I got fired from my childcare job of five years because the other staff weren't as popular with the kids, so they accused me of being "creepy" because the kids all wanted to play a game with me instead of them. FML

She can hide with another child, I think it's sweet they wanted to include her. Maybe you were being a little uptight and should have thought of how she could play instead of why she couldn't.

It's saddening that she's blind, and may have been embarrassed but you did your best OP!

Unless they were trying to get her to be the seeker.

but maybe is a good thing they didnt see her as someone different and instead as someone who can be invluded !

Wouldn't she still be an excellent seeker if her hearing would be a lot better?

THIS. YES. ALWAYS INCLUDE. LOOK FOR WAYS THEY CAN PARTICIPATE. DONT LET THEIR DISABILITY DISABLE THEIR CHILDHOOD.

and if shes the seeker she could probly hear them (i hear blind people are exceptional at hearing)

My friends and I used to play this game called 'clap hide and seek' where the seeker closes their eyes and you say their name such as "Hank clap" and they'll clap three times in a row. You only get to ask each person to clap three times and you use your hands and ears to guide you around and it's actually quite fun. It works better playing on a playground where you can use things to guide you around.

If she's a seeker, at the very least, another kid could be guide seeker

I don't think op was being "uptight" per say. I think she was trying to explain the situation to the kids. There's no reason why they can't come up with a different version of the game or have her play with someone as a guide, but it's still good to let them know that she may not necessarily be able to play the way they would normally play. It's good to educate kids about certain disabilities and how there may be things they can't do or don't feel comfortable doing, and teach them how to make a situation or game in a way that includes the person with the disability. For instance, explain that she may not be able to be the seeker, but she could be a hider or play with a partner or something. I think you did good op, and maybe try and come up with different ways she could play that (or any other game) or come up with different ways the game could be played in general. And I love the kids for including her and not seeing her disability as hindering in any way.

That's more like Marco Polo than hide and seek

Exactly #1, OP should be happy they were nice and were including her and trying to make her be a normal kid instead of saying she can't play...

As a blind person, I strongly agree with 48.

Hi #56, There was another post the other day about the"take a stand against bullying" posters in the specialized school for children in wheelchairs. I think here the teacher should not have reacted in the way she did. She discourages the other children from interacting in a normal way with the girl as one of their peers. Now she practically forces them to just see her as a disabled person. Rather than that she could have joined the play and steered it into the direction where the girl could enjoy it too. I liked the others suggestions.

Someone could have helped her and she could have felt around. :)

The child can hide no need to be the seeker

I like that they're including her but op said they are also young so it's understandable that they might not know what it meant

Kids are kids regardless if more thought was emphasized the blind child would be smiling instead of frowning ,...maybe next time eh ?

You could have had them do a Marco Polo version of hide and seek and had the rest of the kids close their eyes.

an excellent suggestion. you need to be booted off FML

I think the kids just wanted to include her. Really it is very sweet.
