Today, I got an offer to study at a good university. My father has been pushing me to apply for years, so I ecstatically broke the news. Instead of congratulating me, he just grunted and delivered the more important news that he's divorcing my mum. Moment ruined. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I received my acceptance letter to one of the most prestigious universities in the US, as well as a nice scholarship. I was so proud of myself, I eagerly showed my dad, hoping he would shed a tear or two. His only words were, "Just get a job so you can get the hell out of my house." FML
Thanks ma
Today, I excitedly told my mom how I got accepted to the master’s program of my dreams. She decided now would be a good time to proudly repeat for the millionth time how she gave up a full ride to the Ivy League to marry my father, and I ought to be a "good woman" and do the same. FML
Today, my boyfriend proposed. I was about to call my parents and tell them we're getting married, but they called me first to announce they're getting a divorce. FML
Today, I happily announced that I'm getting married. My dad immediately shot back, "And I'm getting E.D., who gives a damn?" Just when I thought he was joking, he muttered that "the bitch" will take everything in our divorce. Moment ruined. FML
Today, I was out and was having a wonderful time. At exactly midnight, I get a call from my father. He's divorcing my mother. He's also going to Florida with his mistress for the weekend. If that wasn't the best news ever, he'd love if I found an apartment to live in ASAP. FML
Today, I was accepted to college and received a scholarship equal to almost half the tuition. After sharing this news with my parents, I spent the next 35 minutes getting yelled at about how I wasn't allowed to go there because my boyfriend might go there. FML
Today, I broke up with my girlfriend. After breaking the news to my parents, I heard my dad mutter when I left, "Damn it, I liked her better than him." My mother didn't protest. FML
Today, I happily told my parents that my boyfriend proposed to me last night. My dad's response? "Marry that goofy bastard and you're out of the will." FML
Today, I was rejected from the University of Washington. My dad has been a professor there for 30 years, and is on the board of admissions. FML
Today, I got a large envelope from a college I applied to earlier. My mom, expecting big news, made my family gather round as I opened it. It ended up being a letter of rejection from not just that school, but all three campuses of the state college. FML

Congratulations OP. Hang in there, and don't let their problems over shadow your success!

Being a senior in high school myself, I can sympathize with you. Sorry op

What does you being a senior have to do with OP and her parents getting divorced?

I think 12 means that since he is a senior in high school, he knows the pressure of applications and stuff like that.

He shouldn't have stolen your moment. I wouldve said something like "maybe he needed a shoulder" but considering he "grunted", I got that he was being an ass so nevermind. Congratulations though and I'm sorry about the divorce.

I don't know if ops dad was trying to steal ops moment. Divorce is heart shattering and depressing. I think this was a case of bad timing because any other day if op would've brought the news of their acceptance into college then their father would be ecstatic (I'm assuming). The news of divorce took precedent over ops achievement and hopefully ops father will come around to congratulating op. Either way op I'm sorry for your parents divorce and congratulations on your acceptance.

When my parents decided to get a divorce, they had my brother and I sit down so they could tell us softly, not just throw it out there like it was no big deal.

When my parents got divorced they decided to handle it like adults and tried not to put extra stress on the children. I understand depression but he shouldve replaced it with happiness for.his child..wouldve made him feel.better being happy...

He taught me that ham, Swiss cheese, raspberry jam and buttery puff pastry are excellent together.

Don't let the bastard ruin your moment. Tell him not to be pissed at at your mum. She only slept with the dean because you didn't have enough special electives to make you a good candidate. Tell him if he would have spent more time helping you with your entrance exams none of this would have hapened.

Your dad was probably feeling absolutely awful at the time. Even if they had seen a divorce coming, it's still something else when the words are said and it's really being done. Do you really find it weird that he couldn't be happy for you then and didn't congratulate you? I would be more upset about my parents getting a divorce and my dad obviously feeling terrible about it than the moment being ruined. You can celebrate your acceptance later.
