Today, I found out that the engineers I work with believe that a woman with an engineering degree working in an engineering company is apparently equivalent to a "secretary for engineers." I am that woman. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, within the span of one day, the owner of the business I work at said I could write "Technical & Compliance Manager" on paperwork where I was the approver for engineered compliance of product regulatory records, but also that I was "basically just a secretary." FML
Today, I was conducting a meeting regarding safety concerns on my field site. While I made a comment, a client rep yelled out that women don't know construction, and that I should be acting like a proper secretary and should get my boss. I'm the Construction Manager. FML
Today, I found out that, although I have the same job title and complete the same work as my male colleagues, I get paid 15% less, purely because I'm a girl. FML
Today, at work, I heard a child whisper, "Mom, why do that woman's ears look like that?" The mom replied, "Because she's not smart enough for a good job." I have large plug ears and a degree in mechanical engineering. I waitress because no engineering firm will hire me. FML
Today, I started work as the head engineer for a big civil engineering project. I met the rest of my team, in particular the environmental engineer who I'll need to get along with the most. As it turns out, I took her virginity when we were freshmen in college. She still thinks I'm an asshole. FML
Today, I told my supervisor that I want to do the work I was hired to do, which is Data Engineer. He told me he doesn't have the workload for another data engineer, and needs someone with people skills. He's very happy with the current situation. I left my previous job because of the same problem. FML
Today, I realised being the only female engineering student sucks. I have exactly one friend, because everyone else is too busy staring at my boobs to have a conversation. FML
Today, I found out that my assistant is now my manager. FML
Today, it was still easier for me to get an engineering PhD than it is to get a girlfriend. FML
Today, after working at the same place for 3 years, I found out that they are not only cutting my hours but now I have to take orders from some girl I trained because she was promoted over me. FML

Since you didn't mention your vast years of experience I'll just guess that you're another entitled college kid, male or female, who has a skewed view on what the first job is going to all be about.

This is my life. I am a female engineer! Didn't you ger used to this in college? First of all, get over it & realize they hired you for a reason. Realize you will have to work 2X as hard, 2X as long & 3X as smart. It just is. Had some real assholes for bosses &even quit but kno they dont deserve me

One more thing, many are not as smart as you, especially the aging engineers who never took steel design in the bronze age! In any job, respect is earned. Refuse to fetch coffee, notes, etc. I did, then they caught on. Hang in there, it gets better.

If you're a recent graduate, you ARE a secretary for engineers, regardless of gender, until the more senior engineers decide you have enough real world experience to not kill people. If you're an experienced engineer, you should know better than to put up with that by now. If you're an engineering tech calling yourself an engineer, please stop calling yourself what you're not.
