Today, I found out my father didn't have a rare brain disease, and that he was just an alcoholic. I've been taking care of him every time his "brain disease" acts up, for 2 years. FML
Collection
Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
They tried to make me go to rehab…
Today, my father got out of rehab for his alcoholism. This would be great if he hadn't started drinking the moment he got home. FML
Today, my father, who I haven't spoken to in over 12 years, contacted me. He just wanted to let me know that I should get tested for a rare neurological disease. The only thing the man has given to me since my conception is potentially a death certificate. FML
This is fine
Today, I found out that my father, who very recently lost his wife, decided that drunkenly hitting on my long-time boyfriend's mom was a good idea. FML
Today, I found out my dad has a 1-in-a-million disease that makes your liver process pain medication at twice the rate of a normal person. If that wasn't bad enough, he also tells me he hopes I don't have it too, because it can be passed down. He said this because I'm 29 weeks pregnant. FML
Pissed
Today, I had an hour-long massage, meditated for while and was finally feeling good. Then I had to call an ambulance for my idiot father who had managed to get alcohol poisoning. FML
Asshole
Today, after my dad recently had to go sober or face dying within a year, it turns out that without the alcohol, his personality still sucks. He used to be a drunk asshole, but now he’s just an asshole. At least when he was drunk he used to pass out. Now he can be an asshole all night without stopping. FML
Anti-Dad
Today, after suffering a severe brain injury and receiving a large amount of money from the lawsuit for physical and mental rehab, I found out that my dad stole it all and spent it on himself. FML
Functioning
Today, I realised that what I had thought was my dad's default state for the past 17 years is actually his drunken state. FML
Today, I came home to find my dad drinking. Trying to be cheerful, I greeted him with a "Hi, dad!" He sighed, shook his head, and said "It hurts me when you call me that." FML
Today, I got my medical checkup back. Apparently, I'm diagnosed with a liver condition generally found in alcoholics. I've never drank in my life. FML

Your dad might be a dick, but you're a special kind of stupid. How did you not notice the stench of alcohol coming off his mouth?

I have the rare disease of sending embarrassing messages to my ex's after a couple of drinks

How come you never asked the doctor what was the condition of his "brain disease"? I think YDI.

Yeah! It's not like there's something called doctor-patient confidentiality, after all.

HIPAA

Doctor-patient confidentiality? It is his/her dad. He/she has a right to ask.

No they don't #28. No one but the patient has the right to have access any of their medical information.

Honestly my mum used to come up with all sorts of weird reasons for stuff she did/said and cos I don't really drink or hang out with people that do it took me a long time to realise she was bullshitting and shes just a drunk. Sorry dude. I remember reading someone that when someone has an addiction that they go through denial, but the people around them have to too when they realise and that's why it takes people a long time to come to terms with it sometimes. Maybe. Anyway, don't beat yourself up about it OP.

You must be really young or naive. Or in a lot of denial. Now that you know, it's going to take a lot to process. If it gets too hard, don't be afraid to seek counseling. Trust issues might crop up for you if you brush it under the rug or act like you're not upset in any way.

There wasn't a time that you realized that his symptoms were very similar to the "symptoms" of being drunk? That being said I can't vote YDI, because I can't blame OP for trusting their father when he says that he is sick. The dad is a dick for taking advantage.

At least you care enough to take care of him, even if he doesnt have a disease

My father in law quit drinking after 30 years; he's currently living in my basement to get back on his feet. He has what I call stupid **** post drunk syndrome. I know he's not drunk because it's obvious when he is but he kept 30 years of drunk habits. I can look this man in the eyes, tell him something, he will nod then ignore what I said. It's not selective it's everything either of us say to him. It's been a couple of months and I can't get him to even wash his own god damn dishes or clean up after himself in the slightest. It's possible your dad did cause his own stupid **** post drunk syndrome. If not sorry you've wasted so much time tending to a drunk OP.

Having a father who is an alcoholic, I find this hard to believe. At a minimum you would know he is drunk, alcoholics stink like booze all the time.

Chemical dependency to self treat what is likely depression probably counts as a brain disease.

You might be right there - that''s what killed my dad, and probably my wife's as well.
