Today, I found a crying little kid alone in a park. I walked around with him for a bit to try to find his parents. When I found his dad, all he did was take the kid and menacingly leer at me until I left. FML

Hello - OP here. I was helping at an event when this happened. First of all, I'd like to say that there was no way the kid just wandered off. His dad was in a parking lot looking for his stuff in his car at least 200 meters away. He just had his head up his ass. Second of all, I know it was wrong to not call the police or at least get some adult involved, but I'm only 14, and so I guess I wasn't jaded enough yet to realize any predator in the vicinity might see that as the perfect opportunity. For what it's worth, though, I saw a very close resemblance between the two, so at least that's something.

You'd think he'd be grateful you weren't some weirdo or something... You did the right thing, OP.

and I'd bet they don't worry at all about people they know. despite it being family or friends 75% of the time who molest. stranger danger is bs and so is paranoia about people interacting with kids.

A child doesn't have to be molested to be kidnapped by a stranger...

You're right that danger from people they know warrants more concern than it gets, but wrong about danger from people they don't. Carefulness is justified.

You ruined his escape plan

I would've called the cops while looking for a parent

Just because the child was lost, does not mean the father was negligent. Children wander off and sometimes quite quickly. You turn your back for five seconds and they're GONE! When your child vanishes, the natural parental reaction is to FREAK OUT! When you're freaking out, you're not thinking clearly. Something a rational person would recognize as an act of kindness, might be perceived as a threat to a parent in full "Papa Bear" mode. What he sees is his child, who he is hard wired to protect, with someone who, for all he knows, could be a serial rapist and murderer! Just because he glared at you, does not make him a bad person.

Concern is no excuse for being a jerk.

Well, as Geeta says, focus on the good Karma and don't worry about the results. :) Good job, OP. I hope you haven't lost faith and would continue to be a good human being.

I Worked in retail- we always had the child point out their parent. We also had the bathrooms checked and managers at the doors as soon as the child or parent come to the front desk. And we didn't announce it over the intercom, just had the employees look for parent or child trying to find the other. It's also very good if the child & parent have a code word. And your child knows his Mom or Dads first name.
