Today, I finally broke down and told my mom that I'd relapsed with my eating disorder. She told me to quit whining and eat a burger, because she didn't want to pay for another therapy session. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I decided I need help, so I confessed to my mother that I'm bulimic. After she looked it up online she started screaming at me for "Wasting food that I'm not paying for." FML
Understanding
Today, after struggling with an eating disorder and hiding my symptoms for months, I got up the courage to tell my mom that I need help. Then she asked if an ice cream would make me feel better. FML
Today, I admitted to my parents that I have an eating disorder. Instead of trying to help, my mom stared at me and said, "Duh". FML
Wow, thanks, I'm cured
Today, I told my mom that I'm bulimic and have been for a few years, and that I needed help. She responded by saying, "Well that's clearly not working for you. Why don't you try anorexia?" She then patted me on the head, smiled, and walked away. FML
Today, after I skipped dessert for the third day in a row, my mom cornered me and accused me of being anorexic. I'm actually not far off being clinically obese and I'm just trying to diet, but nothing I say will convince her. She wants me to see a psychiatrist about a disorder I don't even have. FML
Today, I felt sick to my stomach, so I told my mother I didn't want to eat dinner. She started accusing me of being anorexic, so I ate a little bit anyway to make her stop. I then threw up, only for her to take it as confirmation that I have an eating disorder. FML
Today, I told my mom I was finally going on a diet. She let me know how proud she is of me fighting temptation, by making my favorite cookies and dinner. FML
Missing the point 101
Today, I told my mom I lost 30 pounds because of an eating disorder. She told me to keep up the good work. FML
ED much?
Today, my step-mom asked if I was having some eating issues. I admitted that maybe I've picked up some bad habits from friends and school. Now she won't stop bombarding me with self-help books and therapy websites. FML
Misunderstood
Today, after four years of anorexia and lots of recovery, my parents took me out to dinner with my counselor and whole family to celebrate my progress. I ended up eating something that made me vomit everything I ate. My parents now think I am bulmic and are sending me back to counseling. FML

Wow the ignorance in some of these comments. I have been in recovery from anorexia for four years and have been “recovered” for a year and a half. It’s never an easy battle and it’s NEVER as simple as just eating a burger. Eating disorders are based around food but they aren’t ABOUT food. Food is just the outlet for the true issue. I am so sorry that your mother responded this way, especially when it takes a lot of courage to come clean given how private ED’s usually are. And no, therapy is not a magical solve all. Neither is medicine. However, both are very important and helpful when dealing with any mental illness. There are several services you can use and reach out to for help, and please feel free to reach out to me if you need anything. I am a mentor for new patients of my nutritionist, and also was a mentor at the NEDA walk. I am not a licensed therapist but I have been in your shoes and it is helpful to talk to people who understand without judgement. Relapsing is extremely common with ED’s, it is not a failure, and it does not mean that you are not going to be ok. Remember that recovery is not linear and that it is ok to struggle, just don’t give up!

Much like addiction, the underlying issues need to be worked through. It does often take a professional to help you find the root and give you the tools to do so. Not to mention, some of it can be traumatic to try to work through. A therapist can help keep you safe through the process. If you’ve never needed the help of a therapist, feel lucky. None of us really wants to go and sit and reopen wounds and then dig around in those wounds. It takes a brave person to ask for the help that they need.

that sucks but maybe money is tight and she would rather look callus than admit it?

There are programs for that very situation. Some therapists will renegotiate rates instead of putting it through insurance to help with that. Not all. Mine did when I was going twice a week. Money should never be more important than health. If she had cancer and money was tight, would you find it appalling if op still didn’t get the help that was so desperately needed. Mental illness can be a fatal disease. It’s a chemical imbalance that can not be controlled by sheer will.
