Today, I drove across two states to see my brother, who's had a history of heart problems. My mother had sent me a long e-mail saying he was on his death bed and wanted to talk to me to "get his affairs in order." When I arrived worriedly, he was fine. My mother guilt-tripped me to come visit. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Rollercoaster ride of emotions
Today, I went to my dad's workplace because my sister was there and I wanted to see my newborn niece. I was overjoyed until my dad came up to me. It had apparently been pretty hectic for the past week, because he was on the verge of another stress-induced heart attack. Yes, another. We had to help him outside. FML
Adieu
Today, I saw an old friend while out and about. Since I don't leave the house very often, my friend was surprised to see me in person. He jokingly asked if someone was dying, and I cried in response. I was in fact going to the hospital to say goodbye to my grandma. FML
Today, I was driving home from swim practice with my mom. I glanced over and saw my brother's hot friend, who I've been secretly in love with forever. He waved to me, and excitedly I waved back. I then heard my mom say, "You're gonna die when you see how bad you look right now." FML
Thanks for the heads up
Today, at his request, I met up with my brother for lunch so we could catch up. Apparently, our mother put him up to it so he could tell me our parents are getting a divorce. They didn't want to tell me themselves because I'm "too emotional." FML
Golden child
Today, my mum went and told everyone she only went to the doctor after being ill because my brother told her to. It was me who'd been telling her for weeks to go. FML
Today, my mom let my younger brother borrow my car. He managed to crash it through the garage door. While I was in another country. Somehow, I manage to get berated by my mom because I'm not doing enough to make my brother feel better about him having an accident involving my car and my house. FML
**** me, right?
Today, I got offered a ride to go home for the weekend. I go to college six hours away from home and haven't seen my family for almost two months. When I called my mom with the good news, she told me not to come. FML
Drama alert
Today, I went to visit my grandparents, as my grandmother may not have long left. When my stepfather wasn't grilling my visibly uncomfortable grandad about Bible passages, my mother was trauma-dumping about how hard her life has been, and how awful her marriage to my father was. They're his parents. FML
Favorite child
Today, I heard that my mom is coming back from France, where my brother lives. I have lived in the same place, exactly 45 minutes from my mother, for 6 years. She hasn't visited me once, but has been out of state to see my sibling. FML
Growing old is a shipwreck
Today, I visited my Mum. She has invited me to visit her before, but kept cancelling whenever I tried to arrange an actual visit. I finally went over anyway, only to find her in a soiled nappy, room in ruins, with kidney failure-induced dementia. Sometimes they hide it well over the phone. FML

Do you never visit your family?

I assume not if her mother had to tell that big of a lie just to get her to visit...either that or she's just crazy:/ how sad.

Op may live too far away to visit or they don't get a lot of time off

Nice mother you got there....

That may bring bad luck. In my culture.
Unlovable_Me 14
It'll bring bad blood if she keeps lying to her daughter like that

Wow.. I'm sorry OP. That is never something to lie about

Sounds like maybe you don't visit your family often enough. Your mother shouldn't have played that card on you, though.

The mother might be the reason they don't visit if she's willing to pull shit like that..

OP might have a crazy work schedule or things that make it difficult to visit.

Yeah it was a bad card to play. Op could be in the same situation as me (my dad has strokes randomly); not enough money or a busy schedule. So, they could be calling and skyping like i do

A little twisted... However, try to make the most of it, cos you never know with these things...

Then remind your mother about the little boy who cried wolf. I agree FYL

Does she often try to get you to visit with no avail, or is this just what she started with? Followup would be great. Still, fyl, OP.

I think it's both FYL and YDI. How sad that your mom had to trick you into visiting her and your brother. Family is so important and you'll miss them when they are gone :(

We have no way of knowing how much op visits or doesn't visit or reasons. If my family member pulled something like this I definitely wouldn't want to visit again.

faking death is never an appropriate card to pay. Even if OP never visited, under no circumstance does OP deserve to believe her brother is dying. I agree that family is important, but being someone's family is a title that is earned not given, and what OP's mom did proves that she has lost some of that right, or not earned it at all (I'm unaware of their relationship, so I'm not exactly sure whether this was a one time thing or not).
