Today, I confessed to my coworker that I'm interested in her romantically. She turned me down, saying that I'm a great guy, but that she basically doesn't want mixed-race children. She said she isn't racist, though, so I guess it's all okay, right? FML

She's a little full of herself isn't she? Who the hell said you wanted to have kids with her anyway?

Meanwhile, the melting pot continues to melt, and her genes are kept out of it another day. So there's an upside to this.

Well... It is her choice.

Except preference implies that while you prefer A, you'd still date B if you had more things in common with and got along with B better. This is racism and basically stating that because of the race of OP, she wasn't going to date OP because 'oh no mixed race children' So yes, I'm going to say that she's racist, not a person with a preference. It's okay OP, you dodged a bullet.

So she doesn't like his ethnicity, that makes her racist? If she isn't attracted why should she give him a chance?

She's stated nothing about not being attracted to him, rather she doesn't want kids with mixed race. It sounds less like she isn't attracted to his certain race(mixed race is any type of race with another) and more she's one of the people who wants "pure" children and to keep her line one race.

What? Preference in terms of dating implies what you'd like to have, not which you'd rather have. No one can force you to take the apple over the orange if you prefer oranges.

its ether a thoroughbred or a no-or-bred. . whatever you get the idea.

Who's to say that she has to be into another race? It's her preference.

if the OP can prefer white women then his coworker can prefer white men.. and he didn't really "dodge a bullet" since it seems the woman wants a serious relationship (she brought up the subject of kids). If the OP was white and the coworker black then there would be no talk of racism

You're assuming OP's black and the coworker's white. Kind of suspicious assumptions there. Makes me wonder...

because black men go for white women more than white men go for black women plus the fact that she felt the need to defend herself and say she's not racist which these days all white people feel like they should do because black ppl yell racism! even if someone sneezed next to them on the bus

YDI for having such a victim complex. It's her preference.

Well, at least she turned you down then, because it wouldn't be so fun when you're married and you bring up children.

All these "preference" comments. I guess this must be the latest pro-racism argument the lovely folks from Stormfront are using.

so all white women have to say yes when asked out by black men for fear of being called racist? seriously? yet nobody complains if a black woman rejects a white man cause she can "choose for herself" and "she's strong and independent" Why aren't all women allowed to choose what they like?

Being with someone is a privilege, not a right. Having a preference is a matter of taste, it isn't racism. If she had said "You aren't my type", this wouldn't even be an issue.

The fact she didn't just say that instead says it all.

People can be weird when it comes to what they want for children. Maybe she believes that mixed-race children are given a more difficult time by society (which in some places they are) and she doesn't want that for them, and it isn't about there being anything wrong with your particular ethnicity. Is it a naive/stupid/overly protective reasoning? Quite possibly. Is she necessarily racist? Nope. Also, if I were her I wouldn't be so obsessed about the outcome of children when just thinking about going out with someone. Sounds like you're better off not losing your time with her, since you both have obvious different perspectives and priorities.
