Today, I asked my girlfriend's father for permission to take his daughter's hand in marriage. He asked me "Which one?" I said "Uh, the one I'm dating... Lisa." He belched and said, "Yeah sure, throw 'er off a cliff for all I care. Piss off, boy." So much for chivalry. FML

Same thing different taste
Property dispute
Today, I asked my girlfriend's dad for permission to take her hand in marriage. He said no, because he doesn't want her marrying a "sexist idiot who treats her like property", which he thinks asking permission amounts to, then told me to grow up. FML
Traditional
Today, I asked my girlfriend's father if I could marry his daughter. He smiled, shook my hand, and said "No. Now get out of my house." FML

Today, my boyfriend went to ask my dad for my hand in marriage. All I could make out from the door was mumbling, until profanities started flying. My boyfriend shouted "well she's a SINGLE bitch now!" and stormed out of the house. My dad still refuses to tell me what happened in there. FML
Today, I happily told my parents that my boyfriend proposed to me last night. My dad's response? "Marry that goofy bastard and you're out of the will." FML

Great, just great
Today, I introduced my girlfriend to my dad. I thought it was a good idea at the time, at least until he took her aside for a private chat. During the chat, he told her all about my two previous marriages and advised her to "get out while you can". FML

Good on you. Hopefully you don't have to deal with him too much in the future

That was classy to ask for his blessing. It sucks that you may have a classless asshole for a father in law.

Well, at least Lisa for once will have a caring male at her side. Bless you both and good luck for your future!

Maybe he just thought your gesture was stupid and out-dated? It's really up to her whether she marries you or not.

Man, if my boyfriend asked for my father's permission to marry me, he wouldn't need it anyway - no chance in hell I'm marrying someone who thinks of me as my father's property.

OP didn't ask for permission because he thinks that his girlfriend is his father's property. He asked as a respectful gesture. He probably would have married her anyway if her father had said no and he knows damn well that it's ultimately up to her. While asking for permission does originate in a belief that women were property, it's evolved to become a gesture to show respect to the family

My thoughts exactly, 18. My husband asked me if I wanted to marry him and left my father out of it. After telling my parents, my father asked me if that was what I wanted. Both my father and my husband know I make my own decisions without "permission".

So, what is more important? Showing respect to the family or to the woman you're sharing a life with?

Um, who said you had to choose one or the other?

Understood, some family's are rooted in tradition. The original intent for it was for the betterment of the family. Those that still do it do it as a sign of respect. Though, a lot of old traditions fall out of places or lose the original intent. Also, I highly doubt the father was serious. It was, more than likely said in a off hand sarcastic manner knowing the boyfriend was going to ask anyway.

It's not always mutually exclusive. Some women like the idea of their father saying "yes" to her getting married, after all, he is the other important man in her life...

Well that's one way to respond to someone asking you for your daughter's hand in marriage. A very non-traditional response, but nonetheless he said yes.

Well.. At least he said yes? You know, it could've been a lot worse if he said no. Congratulations, by the way ?
