Today, while in an ambulance after being in a car wreck, the EMT told me I would need to sign some electronic paperwork. He held it above my head for me to sign and promptly dropped it on my my face, breaking my nose. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I went to the emergency room with chest pain. I didn't have a heart attack, but I now have a broken nose after passing out and face-planting in the waiting room. FML
Pissed
Today, in frustration, I threw a spanner across the room at work, but it bounced back and hit me in the head. I woke up in an ambulance with a cracked skull and a gorgeous EMT lady. I would've tried to ask her out, but while I was out cold I'd pissed myself, and the whole ambulance reeked of it. FML
Life is just great
Today, I was taking a shower. Having epilepsy, I seized, tripped over the edge of the tub, and smashed my face against an open toilet, breaking my nose. FML
Today, I went to the hospital emergency room to visit my boyfriend who had badly sliced his leg open. It ended with me being admitted with a possible head trauma, after hitting my head on the wall and floor as I collapsed at the sight of his wound. FML
Today, I was walking down the street, when I saw a guy in front of me trip and fall forwards, and I quickly jumped forward to steady him. Apparently he thought he was being mugged, and threw his head backwards into my face, leaving my nose a bloody mess. FML

Today, I was sent to the hospital after being hit by a car while on my bicycle. The police officer said it was my fault for not looking, even though the car pulled up without looking. I now have a small herniated disc in my neck and abrasions on my thigh. FML
Today, I fell off my boyfriend's motorcycle. I had a few scrapes and bruises, and my boyfriend called for an ambulance as a precaution. The paramedics managed to drop me on my head. FML
Ironic
Today, on my way out to get salt for the driveway, I fell and split my head. I'm now sitting in the ER waiting room. FML
Today, I went to the emergency room for busting my lip open, I had to lie and tell them I slipped and fell. In reality I was singing with the soap bottle and slammed it into my lip. FML
Today, my boyfriend decided it would be fun to sit on my lap. In the process he landed on me so hard that he made me hit my head. Then when he turned around his elbow smacked into my nose causing it to break. FML

Usually the point of riding an ambulance is to get to the hospital luckily-split because of some dire enough medical necessity. It's not like the OP was just filling out forms for a hotel stay, in which casual pace might be more expected.

Wait can't you just say no at that point? You can deal with them later and I wouldn't sign something while in a state of fear like that. They aren't allowed to drop you of at the corner or something because that has to be illegal. You literally have all the power of this situation, even in the court room.

that really broke your nose??

I hope one of those forms wasn't an "EMS non-liability form"...

You can probably get the ambulance company to pay for medical services needed for the broken nose, like resetting it, because it was really stupid of him to hold it over your face. Unless you were restrained flat on your back to a backboard, he's supposed to hold it in front of your face.

OP stated they were in a car wreck. I can almost guarantee he/she was restrained on a backboard. EMS is not a taxi, they're usually fairly busy. I'm assuming this was probably the best time they had to sign the paperwork as they would be transferring control of care to the hospital as soon as they arrived. Unfortunately, there isn't always a "good time" in emergency care.

They still aren't supposed to hold it directly over OP's face specifically because of the safety hazard- they hold it over one side or over the patients chest. And if OP was tied to a backboard, their arms would be restrained, meaning they can't sign it anyway.

Looks like someone needs to re-read the chapter on safety and liability from their EMS book. On another note, to the one who said that said that the point is to get there really fast, not always. There is a priority system that is used based on the stability of the patient, circumstances of the injury/illness, and chances of deterioration. A car accident patient can be considered low priority if the accident was not severe and the patient is very stable. In that case, the signature (which is required for liability and consent reasons) should be acquired within the last few minutes of the transport. Obviously, if a patient is unable to sign, the EMT will sign or initial under "implied consent" laws. Source: being one of the top students in my EMT class at a very high quality academy.
