The truth will always come out

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, my mom told me that she had great news: we were going to meet my biological parents. I didn't know I was adopted. FML
Today, I found out that I was adopted. I'm 46 years old with 11 real siblings and no one bothered to tell me until I found the documents in my dead adoptive father's house. FML
Today, I decided it was time to tell my daughter that she had been adopted. Not only had she known for 5 years, she found out from my drunk sister. FML
Today, my mom dropped me off at a friend's house. Upon leaving, my friend's mom said how much I looked like my mother. My mother then replied, "That's funny, she was adopted." This was the first I'd heard of this. FML
Today, I overheard my parents arguing over who had to tell me that I'm adopted. FML
Today, my mom was screaming at me and said, "I wish I'd never adopted you." I guess I'm adopted then. FML
Today, I found out the joke I’ve been telling for 15 years is true. I am adopted. FML
Today, I found out that I was not adopted and in fact my parents are my biological parents. How did I find out? Over dinner. How long have I been believing I was adopted? 22 years. Why did I start believing I was adopted? My siblings thought it would be a funny joke. My mom played along. FML
Today, I decided to come clean with my daughter about her adoptive status within my family. Just after I told her she was adopted, I realized that I have been telling her stories about me giving birth to her. FML
Today, I, a person who will be 21 in a few months, was mistaken for my mom's older brother. My mom is in her fifties. Apparently this is becoming increasingly common, because the world sucks. I didn't realize it was affecting me this badly. FML

Parents are those who raise, not those who knock someone up/get pregnant.

Gotta agree, I don't see how this is a FML if you had a decent upbringing. Ok, if you didn't have a decent upbringing then perhaps it is a FML but really????? She took you in when your biological parents couldn't raise you, she changed your diapers, made sure you had a roof over your head and food in your stomach and I have no doubt you had clothes on your back too. She would have often put you before yourself and you cry FML! For shame!

How does this change anything to make it an FML?
Jewelofagal 2
It changes everything. Every aspect of the OP's life now has to be re-examined and set into this new framework of knowledge she has about who she is and who her family is. It's traumatizing to have everything you thought you knew about yourself, your upbringing, and your relatives swept away in one sentence. It'll take a lot of time, introspection, and tears (not to mention a lot of anger at the people who kept this a secret) to work through this.

It's called common sense and maybe a little bit of reality TV. Not "psych student".

this shouldn't be an FML. I'm pretty sure after 49 years you think of her as mother. be thankful she raised your ass as her own

Another possibility is that the mother is suffering from some dementia and that the adoption story isn't true at all, but is the result of the illness.

This was my first thought as well. Given her age it is very possible she is confused due to an illness like dementia or Alzheimer's .

The only way this could remotely be an FML is that OP may feel it's too late to find her biological parents (alive), if she's so inclined.

OP, that really does not seem like something fml worthy. plenty of people are adopted, and don't even know for a long time. so chill.

I'm totally down with the majority. So? The ONLY thing I can think of that can cause major concern is any health risks. Ya know, like if your blood family carries anything that may lead you to be a higher risk of having something like cancer or the such.
