Today, my daughter is so out of touch with anything not related to her phone and her social popularity that she doesn't know who Hitler was. I had to show her on YouTube, and while we aren't religious anymore, we are a Jewish family so this is an extra level of parental shame for me. FML

Today, I watched my mother tell a man that the holocaust was "a good thing" and "necessary for population control". That man was my girlfriend's father. Who is Jewish. FML
Today, I was discussing my family heritage with my girlfriend's parents. The moment I told them that I came from a German background, her seven-year-old brother pointed at me and yelled, "HITLER!" FML
Today, I had to explain to half of my class that yes, my birthday is on the same day as Hitler's, but no, it does not make me a Nazi. FML
Today, a parent of one of the students I teach called me to complain that I was teaching her child "lies" and "fairytales". I was teaching them about the Holocaust. FML
Today, I watched The Passion of the Christ with my girlfriend. She kept scoffing at what she called the "historical inaccuracies", and actually tried to convince me that Hitler killed Jesus. When I corrected her, she looked at me, mouth agape, as if I was insane. FML
Today, I'm ashamed at ever having become a parent after I found out my daughter has been leading an online bullying campaign against a girl at her school who has disabilities, both mental and physical. Some of the language she was using in the online messages were just disgusting and unforgivable. FML
Today, my daughter announced on Facebook that she is directly descended from extra-terrestrials. That would be okay - except she's 25 and believes it's true. FML
Today, my husband thought it would be acceptable to watch Breaking Bad on Netflix with my 4-year-old in the room. What happened to be the only line he picked up? "Well heil Hitler, bitch!" I found out from his preschool teacher. FML
Today, I got called into the school by my daughter's teacher. Apparently my daughter informed her class that over the weekend she spent her time with her daddy watching porn stars while her mummy was at work. It took a long time to convince her they were actually watching a TV show called "Pawn Stars". FML
Today, I was doing my nightly check of my daughter's phone since a recent stint in the psych hospital, and saw that she had fallen into a peaceful sleep to watching videos on a website dedicated to watching people die. FML

As a history teacher, yes we are definitely teaching the Holocaust and WWII. It depends on if the student is paying attention and wants to learn.

Oy! What a schmuck! How can you exist in social media without knowing about Hitler and Nazis? Godwin's Law insists that you have to start throwing those terms about in comments sections. You don't want to be an ignorant Marjorie who talks about the Gazpacho (cold, Spanish soup) police when the correct word is Gestapo.

So, fun fact: I thought that the correct way to clean every single surface in the bathroom was to use dish soap until I was 28. Why? Because no one ever actually told me they made specific bathroom cleaners. If you don't explicitly tell your kid things, they won't learn them, it's as simple as that. Yes, SOME kids pick things up by osmosis, but yours clearly is not. If you want her to learn things, you are going to have to break down and TELL HER WHAT YOU WANT HER TO KNOW. You can't just keep hoping it'll magically happen--you have to open your mouth and impart information. That's part of what parenting is.
