Today, after getting a new remote job and traveling to the Bahamas while working remote, without asking my employer, because I figured they wouldn't find out and I didn't want them to say no. IT ended up tracking my computer and telling HR I was overseas and I got fired after I returned from my trip. FML

Today, I lost my job for taking an unauthorized vacation. I just got married and requested time off for the wedding and honeymoon months ago; it was approved then. They forgot, and then got angry because I didn't remind them. I did remind them, the day before I left. FML
Today, while on vacation, I got fired for not working a shift I wasn't scheduled for. Even after texting my boss a copy of my vacation approval letter, she still fired me. FML
Today, my boss fired me for "fooling around" on my phone. I was looking for supplies for a surprise party we are throwing him for his birthday, and I didn't want to do it on my work computer because he has access to our history. Also, this happened during my lunch break. FML
Today, I found out I lost a promotion intended for me because I was on planned vacation. FML
Today, while on holiday. I got a call to let me know my job will be gone away when I return. FML
Today, I was enjoying my first vacation day in 2 years. My boss then called me to come in, saying it was an emergency. I got to work and got fired. Yes, my boss made me come in just to fire me. FML
Today, I returned to work after taking two days off to find I'd been fired. Why? For not being at work on those two days. Everything was agreed in writing, all trace of which has mysteriously vanished. I can't work until HR sorts it out, and nobody can tell me how long that'll take. FML
Today, after returning to the UK from my Australian holiday, I was fired from my job for no reason. My boss told me he'd waited till I'd returned to do it. I could have stayed in Australia with my mates traveling for a year if I had been fired before I left. I'm sure he did it on purpose. FML
Today, my manager called me to demand I come in to fix his computer, unpaid of course, since I have no overtime rate, then threatened to fire me when I said, "No chance." I’m 1000 miles away on my honeymoon and he knows this, since he granted my holiday request and congratulated me on the wedding. FML
Today, at work, I stepped out for a few minutes to use the bathroom. Shortly after returning, I found out the hard way that one of my coworkers had used my computer to send a profanity-filled email to our boss, calling him an asshole and telling him to go fuck himself. I'm now jobless. FML

Did you read the documents that came when you were hired? It seems they would have spelled out where you could and couldn't perform your remote work. If they didn't, you should sue them for wrongful termination. Most employees don't have access to data that is internationally sensitive.

I agree with this one. I’ve telecommuted while overseas and it worked out beautifully. In this case, I did have approval for the trip as it was a mix of leave and telecommuting. But still. Even if you didn’t explicitly ask permission, I think it seems like an overreaction by your employer. If you work remote and they didn’t spell out where you can and can’t work, plus you were still getting your assignments done in a timely manner...why would they fire you??

The part where OP says " I figured they wouldn't find out and I didn't want them to say no" .... hints that they knew they weren't supposed to leave the country without notifying the company. So, yeah, fired.

Most likely security issues if you are taking a company laptop to another country. Some IT companies will block connections to their VPN if they don't recognize the endpoint or its coming from an unfamiliar place. Someone in my wife's company tried doing the same thing, the person went to Nigeria without telling anyone and IT was blocking VPN connections from that country because of past hacking attempts. Guess who got busted and then sacked?
