Today, while on vacation, I got fired for not working a shift I wasn't scheduled for. Even after texting my boss a copy of my vacation approval letter, she still fired me. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was enjoying my first vacation day in 2 years. My boss then called me to come in, saying it was an emergency. I got to work and got fired. Yes, my boss made me come in just to fire me. FML
Memory error
Today, I lost my job for taking an unauthorized vacation. I just got married and requested time off for the wedding and honeymoon months ago; it was approved then. They forgot, and then got angry because I didn't remind them. I did remind them, the day before I left. FML
Today, after a long couple of months working non-stop, I finally got someone to cover my shift. Turns out she was joking, and when I didn't show up for work, I was fired. FML
Today, I submitted a vacation request to my manager and it was approved. I came back from lunch and was informed that I have been let go. FML
Today, I asked my bosses for three weeks off in July to go on a much-needed vacation. Their response was to fire me on the spot. My bosses are my aunt and uncle. FML
Family time comes first
Today, I lost my job because my mom and stepdad forced me to go on our family vacation, even though my time off got rejected. FML
Monday blues
Today, I asked my boss if I could take a vacation day for my birthday on Monday. She called to tell me yes, and then told me I'm getting laid off. FML
EMERGENCY
Today, my boss called me to say that I'm fired because I was "deliberately ignoring" the messages from a head of another department who wanted to contact me regarding some "urgent" (not really) project. I was on "Do not disturb" because it's my vacation, and this SOB is not even my boss anyway. FML
Today, I was fired for not attending a mandatory meeting. I confronted my boss and told her I never heard anything about it, she told me that daily reminders had been sent out via email for weeks. She then discovered that she failed to enter my email address in the system. I was still fired. FML
Spaghetti junction
Today, I was fired from a job I didn't have. The manager in charge of calling me to tell me if I got the job never called, and never called me back when I left messages. The only time he called me was to fire me for not coming to orientation, which, by the way, he never called to tell me about. FML

Wrongful termination lawsuit...

Whether you have a case depends on what state you work in, and the respective employment laws of that state. (If you're not in the States, disregard this comment.) Regardless of the actual laws, you can take a gamble on whether your boss is aware of the laws. Threaten a lawsuit. The workplace environment doesn't sound ideal and you may not want to return, but maybe you can finagle a severance payment out of it.

Can't actually happen unless we're now living in the 1960's. I can't remember stepping into a time machine?

If they live in an At-Will work state, the person can be fired for any reason.

Actually, it can happen in the U.S. if you are a probationary or at will employee.

Not really. The OP was fired for cause (not working a supposedly assigned shift) and if the cause is faulty, that's grounds for a lawsuit.

That's good to know, thank you. In England you can't just fire people when you feel like it. We don't really do "lawsuits" either. Was wondering what all of the comments were about and why mine was getting severely down-voted. Now I understand a little bit more about America :)

Contact your state department of labor to see if you qualify for unemployment insurance. Also let them know of the situation and see if there is anything you can do about it. Good luck!

Does your boss have a boss? Then take it up with that one. There are many out there that **** up their work and rather fire a scape goat to cover it up. Exposing them to the higher up won't always get your job back but it might get your former boss in a shit of trouble.
