Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, it's my birthday. It's also the day of my grandmother's funeral. I spent most of my 21st birthday in a cemetery. FML
Today, it's my birthday. My grandmother died yesterday. We were close and she basically raised me. FML
Today, it's my birthday. Today is also the day my grandma died, six years ago. Since then, I get to sit through any sort of attempted celebration while my mom sobs and drinks herself into a stupor in the background. FML
Today, I took a day off from work for a doctor's appointment. It ended up taking a lot longer than I expected, because while I was on my way, my mom called to inform me that my great aunt passed away this morning. As a result, I showed up extremely late and was berated. And the worst part? It's my birthday. FML
Today, it was my birthday. Two of my best friends forgot it, and so did my grandparents. All of my friends were busy, so I spent it alone in my car. FML
Today, my family is still telling me to "get over" the death of my great aunt. The great aunt who always gave the most wonderful birthday gifts, and was overall one of the most pleasant people I've ever met, and I'm NOT allowed to be sad that she's gone. Did I mention she died on my birthday? FML
Today, it was my birthday. The only person that remembered was my creepy stalker. FML
Today, my grandma bought me a cemetery plot for my birthday. If that's not weird enough, it's about a two-minute walk from where the rest of my family will be buried. FML
Today, my grandparents told me they couldn't make it to my college graduation, even with months in advance to plan, because they had their annual Mother's Day plans with friends. Plans they've had every year, and are further away. This was the only time I'll ever have a graduation ceremony. My grandpa is my last biological grandparent. FML
Today, after mourning and making my girlfriend cancel her big birthday party, I found out my grandma didn't actually die. FML

Happy birthday to you :(

First of all, you do not celebrate deaths. You celebrate happy events. Secondly, from a rational point of view, you should give priority to people that are alive. Funerals can be arranged to take place on a certain day, but you cannot choose the date you were born on. Also, I doubt repeating the word '*******' three times in your comment makes it right.

That's some poor planning right there.

I spread my grandpa's ashes on my birthday because it was father's day.

I know how you feel OP. My great-grandfather died exactly 2 months before my birthday, and my whole family cancelled on coming to my 18th because it was the two-month anniversary of his death that day. One aunt even told me it was his gift to me, passing away on that date. And on my birthday, the past two years, even my father will post a memorial post on FB for him before I get a happy birthday. So I get where you're coming from. I'd also like to point out, that nowhere does OP state they're not upset their grandparent has passed away. But when it is a day that is commonly about you, to have such a sad event thrust upon it can be upsetting. Think everyone needs to ease up on OP.

Go celebrate your birthday instead, it's more important

Same thing happened to me a few years ago - it sucked - and no body even realised it was my birthday - not even my mother.

The same thing happened to my sister! Our great grandpa died and instead of getting a sweet sixteen, my sister got to go to his funeral.

Suck it up and stop being so selfish! It's unfortunate, but there will be more birthdays for you to celebrate. Your grandmother's funeral only happens once. Your family deserves to be able to grief a loss like that without someone whining because in the midst of their sadness, they forgot. And sorry for your loss, as well.

Are you dumb? The birthday is more important. Ok she died. Whatever. It was his grandma, she's old and she was dying anyway. He's still alive. Why celebrate the one who's dead as opposed to the one who's alive. She doesn't even know that it's going on.
