Please don't do this
Today, I took my girlfriend of five and a half years to family dinner at a restaurant. After we all had finished dessert, I got down on one knee, pulled out my great grandmother's ring and proposed. The entire restaurant was dead silent. She looked around and then slowly walked out. FML

Wow I'm so sorry. Have you gotten an explanation? You'd think after 5 1/2 years she'd shout YES.

I would have walked out too if it happened to me. After 5 years together, he better know that I would be mortified to have what is a private moment to me be made so public.

Sort of like when you send out a mass text about losing your virginity to your girlfriend while she is in a theater elsewhere.... hey, wasn't that another FML?

that is weak. I for one would never ever talk to her again. if she had anything in my place it would have been in a box by the dumpster. she was obviously using him as a security blanket and never had any intention of anything serious.

Probably shouldn't have proposed in public...It would have saved you the embarrassment.

OP, ouch. Nasty, you poor bastard. :( But you really should have made asking your gf to marry you a private thing instead of putting her on the spot in front of your family and strangers like that. Their presence becomes emotional blackmail for her to say yes. FYL, but to some degree, YDI

I agree. Guys, you need to be *really* sure the answer is positive if you contemplate about proposing in this way. But generally it is just a bad idea. Unless a girl has hinted she likes private moments shared with (*your*) family and the rest of the world, don't go down that road as chances are she will not find it romantic. Make announcements of proposals a public thing but not this, which is by definition a very intimate event. And looking at it from your side - the more sincere you want the answer to be, the less outsiders there should be present!

I sorry but all I can muster here is that she is a cold hearted birch for walking out. nuff said
