Phoebe??
Today, while babysitting a young girl, I put on the movie Bambi, as she told me it was her favorite movie. I didn't know that her parents always skipped the scene where Bambi's mom dies. Despite my attempts to comfort her, she was still upset when her parents returned. Her mom blamed me. FML

They should've told you about the movies so don't blame yourself OP!

Kinda is your fault. You knew how the movie was, and you assumed that it was ok. Children that young, you need to be careful.

you are the one who sounds absurd. i only specifically meant small children. and i only said to be careful, not shield her from absolutely everything. you do realize how insane you sound? just because i want to shield the person from the harsh reality of life for the first ten years doesn't mean that it automatically means shielding her from everything ever.

OP assumed it was okay because the kid SAID it was their FAVORITE movie. Kinda implies that they've seen it, right?

So you won't teach them how to deal with things like death? Death happens, it's upsetting but avoiding it all won't help the child. They'll just learn later on and not know how to deal with it because their parents decided to shield them from natural parts of life.

@39 Ten years?! Shielding kids from death doesn't help anyone. Death can come at any time. What are you going to tell your six year old when grandma dies suddenly? I really hope you're trying to troll because your views on parenting are frightening.

well, there isnt much i can do about it right now. having no girlfriend and children. but im pretty sure i would tell the child at an age younger than 10. i dont have a good understanding of how a child's mind works. too many variables. i dont want to do it too early, or too late. (i learned about death at 12, the very hard way.)

It's a kids film you moron

And I learned about death at 5, the hard way. There's never a "too young" moment for a child to understand death, however how you explain and handle it can be wrong. If you approach it right and age appropriately, then no matter the age the child will be fine.

#47 No offense, but if you seriously learned about death when you were 12, then your parents/guardians clearly sheltered you from reality.

Minus one YDI I don't know why we can't undo the votes!!! It sucks that someone else blames you for not being telepathic. F them. They deserve it!

How young was she? Maybe it's a good lesson for her... Parents shouldn't shelter their kids (at a certain age)

Death is a part of life. I think that's why that scene is in a kids movie to begin with. There is no right or wrong time to learn about death. And her parents should have told you, that's not your fault.

Sometimes kids have to be exposed. It's a bad ordeal for the parents, not of you OP

Hi OP I remember I moderated this. I couldn't stop laughing at the image of the mom yelling at you while the daughter was crying at the picture of Bambi's mom. Oh well. I hope the mom wasn't too mad.

That sucks! I can understand the Mom being upset, but how would you know that, unless she told you. Obviously, that wasn't the case. Mom may be upset at herself and blaming you. That being said, it DOES NOT make it ok, but hopefully understandable.

how were you suppose to know that was routinely done? plus, I think a child needs to understand death.
