One track mind
Today, my mom won’t let me go to my boyfriend’s apartment. She says it’s because “I know what you guys are gonna do there I’m not stupid.” She threatened to kick me out of the house if I go. I’m 19. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, my mom kicked me out of the house because I missed my curfew and overslept at my boyfriend’s house. She said she’d let me back in on one condition: that I was still a virgin. My boyfriend’s parents won’t let me live with him. I’m currently staying in the Walmart restroom. FML
Today, my mother stormed into my room shouting about how I never go anywhere and then tells me to go out "NOW" and do something. As she is pushing me out the door, her boyfriend walks in. FML
Today, I overheard my mom’s boyfriend viciously berating and verbally abusing her. I got in his face and started yelling that he can’t talk to her that way. He stormed out and we haven’t heard from him since. Now my mom is pissed and wants to kick me out for “ruining” her relationship. Sorry I guess. FML
Today, I told my girlfriend that her mom doesn't give us any privacy when we're at their place. I suggested that we go to my place for a change, and she agreed. Her mom called my house three times to see what we were doing. We're well beyond teenagers. FML
Today, my mother and I got into an argument, and she told me to go to my room. I refused, prompting her to slap the shit out of me. I'm 29, and she was visiting me at my own house. FML
Today, I learned that my 29-year-old boyfriend won't stay the night at my house because he lives at home with his parents and doesn't want to have "the discussion" with his mom about me. FML
Today, my boyfriend couldn't go on a date with me because his mom said no. He's 23. FML
Today, my 21-year-old girlfriend finally got the courage to tell her mom that she wanted to move in with me. It turns out she was right to be afraid; during the talk, her mother yelled at us, calling her a slut and saying she was too young to be "shacking up with some guy." FML
Today, I fell asleep at my boyfriend’s house and missed my curfew. It’s almost 4 a.m. Scrambling, I arrived home to find the locks changed. On the door knob was a note: “Go live with your boyfriend, you slut. See if he cooks and cleans up after you. I’ll help you move out your stuff in the morning. - Mom” FML
Today, I found out my mom can't wait until I turn 18, so she can kick me out and turn my room into a huge closet for all her clothes. FML

There are a variety of reasons to get a job and your own place once you can instead of being dependent on another person. This is one of them… By the way it’s ultimately just as difficult to be totally dependent on a boyfriend as on Mom… And I agree, you better be very, very careful or you will wind up with an unplanned pregnancy and doubly dependent on someone else. Mom knows this, but what she doesn’t realize is that sex is an important part of life for most adults and you cannot control another adult’s (or even an older teen’s) expression of that.

No problem. Get a job, find an apartment, buy a car, pay your own way in life then make your own rules.

I did some research/writing on this a while back for a project at University and recently watched a college professor do a presentation that confirmed my findings from years ago. Statistically you are less likely to get a divorce if you don't live together before you get married. I know that's an unpopular opinion today but it's backed up by science (research, and statistics). It's hard to know the exact reason we see this phenomenal but if I were to make a guess it would have to do with commitment and practice. Traditional wisdom would tell you you want to try something out before you buy it but that doesn't work in this case. I think what's going on is we're actually practicing not committing to a relationship and then you expect to change the relationship into a committed one. Often times people who live together imagine that marriage is just a paper that you sign and so have very little respect for the institution. That's actually an extremely shallow view. Marriage is actually way way more involved than that. If instead you decide to be committed then you practice being committed by not living together and not sleeping together before you get married. Practicing and practicing correctly help you develop the skills and mental stamina necessary for carrying out tasks. Someone who practices violin a lot makes playing look easy. It's not easy. They just worked hard at it. So practice being committed if you want the relationship to last. Then when you do get married you have been mentally prepared to keep your commitment. Hard times come to everyone and we need our partners to stick with us. Marriage is not all fun and games and neither is life in general. If you want commitment and you want someone to stick with you then act like it and find someone who thinks the same way.
