Today, I confessed to losing my wife's engagement ring, and replacing it with a lookalike months ago. My wife also confessed that her actual engagement ring was locked in the safe, and the one I lost had been a fake. I've been paying the replacement off on my credit card for 6 months. FML

Today, I’ve been the proud owner of an engagement ring for about 7 hours, and I’ve just spent the last 4 of them desperately searching for the damn thing, as I’ve lost it already. I daren’t tell my partner, since he was so sure I’d lose it, he'd told me to put it in our safe, and I stubbornly refused. FML
Today, I saw a picture of my ex giving her new boyfriend an extremely familiar ring. Upon zooming in, I realized that it was the engagement ring I gave her that she claimed to have had stolen from her home. FML
Today, I was shopping for rings with my fiancée. We spent over two hours selecting the perfect ring and diamond to match. When filling out the paperwork I discovered I left my wallet at home. She had to pay the 20% down payment for the ring. FML
Today, I found out that my engagement ring was actually my husband's ex-fiancée's. FML
Today, I bought a fake "wedding ring" at Target to play a prank on my parents. They kicked me out, saying my "fiancé" can take care of me now. There is no fiancé, and I just lost my job. FML
Today, in preparation for proposing to my girlfriend, I borrowed one of her rings so I could discreetly get her ring size. Not only have I now lost the ring, which turns out to be a keepsake from her dead grandmother, I still don't know her ring size. FML
Today, my wife figured out I gave her a dollar store ring for our anniversary. FML
Today, I went to a jewellery store to sell my wedding ring, after a long and painful divorce. The shop owner took one look at it and called the cops because I tried to sell him a diamond ring that had been stolen from him 3 years ago. My ex-husband left the country a week ago. FML
Today, I went to sell my wedding rings, due to the fact that I'm getting divorced from a man who cheated on me. The jeweler informed me that the stone in my engagement ring is fake. I won't even be able to cover the divorce costs from the proceeds. FML
Today, I found out my fiancée has been sleeping with the salesman I bought her engagement ring from. He knew. FML

There was nothing wrong about keeping the engagement ring in the safe, and wearing a copy. It's however wrong to have lost the so-said ring and not coming clean immediately even if OP was insecure or afraid of being scolded.

Tbh, honesty and communication are far more important. It's kind of sad that our society puts so much emphasis on the material aspects of a relationship (especially the rings and the dress), to the point where a husband would feel the need to lie about losing his wife's engagement ring for fear of reprimand. True, losing a keepsake wold suck. But in the end, it's only an inanimate object and the relationship itself is far more valuable.

Smart move by your wife to lock away the valuable ring and wear the fake. Perhaps you both should have been honest with each other though... Isn't that part of committing yourself to someone for life?
