It's gettin' hott in here…
Today, I agreed to stay a week with my wife's parents, who she told me were traditional Japanese. I was prepared for having to wear Japanese clothes while in the house, but I wasn't prepared for communal bathing in the same huge bath with her father, grandfather, uncle and two brothers. FML

It's a way to learn their culture. While it may have been a surprise, her family might welcome you even more for being part of their custom.

Japan is famous for its communal baths, you should have been aware that this is the norm. Also I'm confused about the traditional Japanese clothing thing, they wear "regular" (western styled) clothing a lot. The only way I can make sense of this is if her family was not actually in Japan, that would be a bit strange and unexpected.

Google Translate says that translates to "Hot Springs"

An おんせん (onsen) is a hot spring, yes. So, 33, that's wrong. The thing referred to in the post is a せんとう (sentou), a public bathhouse.

* Forgot an entire part to that sentence. Derp. 勉強して頑張って、33.

You'll be fine. Not like they're clambering all over each other in a wildly sexual manner. It's just a bath! With five other men, sure, but still just a bath!

I feel like I would have wanted my wife to warn me? but then I also feel like if I knew her very well then I would already know stuff like that about her families culture

There will be modesty for sure. They are not known for parading their junk around. Also, be prepared to "out-rank" them....... hahahahahahahahha

You need to do some research on traditional Japanese culture.

Well, if you can get comfortable with the idea after thinking about it for a bit, then I think it'd definitely be cool of you to try. It's always a good feeling when you see someone trying so hard to learn about an aspect of your own culture. However, I also think that if you are really really uncomfortable with it, then it isn't something you should be forced to do. Coming from a family where my parents were from different cultures, and being in a relationship with someone from a different culture, I believe it's very important to be open-minded and respectful to another's culture, however I do think there are limits and it goes two-ways. Yes, try to participate in another's culture, however they should understand that sometimes the culture/beliefs/ways you were brought up in makes it uncomfortable for you to participate in theirs. As long as you are respectful (not insulting common bathing or wtv), then they should also respect you. It's all about being open-minded and trying to participate in their culture when you can, but finding compromises or just being understanding of each other and respectful when you can't.

As awkward as that may be, embrace the culture! Laugh about it in a few years!

Bathing is very sacred in Japan, it is said to cleanse the soul as well as body and unlike normal baths were people sit in there own filth Japanese scrub themselves clean and the bath is meant to relax the body while soaking.
